5 | WHEREAS, founded in 1967, The Florida Orchestra, Inc., has |
6 | been serving the Tampa-Clearwater-St. Petersburg community as |
7 | one of the premier regional orchestras in the United States and |
8 | the largest professional performing arts organization in Central |
9 | Florida, and |
10 | WHEREAS, The Florida Orchestra, Inc., is a state-designated |
11 | major cultural institution that receives widespread support from |
12 | the community and owes its continued success and growing |
13 | strength as a major cultural asset to the Tampa Bay community, |
14 | the region, and the state, and |
15 | WHEREAS, The Florida Orchestra, Inc., was founded and |
16 | incorporated 40 years ago as the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony |
17 | when the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and the Tampa |
18 | Philharmonic agreed to merge, naming Irwin Hoffman as its first |
19 | music director, and |
20 | WHEREAS, American Record Guide named The Florida Orchestra, |
21 | Inc., "the best orchestra in the Southeast, on the level of the |
22 | San Francisco Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas," and was the |
23 | first symphony orchestra to be invited to and perform at the NFL |
24 | Super Bowl under Maestro Jahja Ling, and |
25 | WHEREAS, after an extensive international search, the |
26 | highly regarded Stefan Sanderling was named Music Director of |
27 | The Florida Orchestra, Inc., in May 2002, and |
28 | WHEREAS, Stefan Sanderling studied at the Leipzig |
29 | Conservatory and the University of Southern California and led |
30 | prestigious orchestras throughout Europe and the United States, |
31 | including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony |
32 | Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the Orchestra de Bretagne, |
33 | and the Philharmonic Orchestra, among many others, and has |
34 | extended his contract with The Florida Orchestra, Inc., through |
35 | the 2011 season, and |
36 | WHEREAS, now in its 40th year, The Florida Orchestra, Inc., |
37 | continues to gain strength and popularity and, with world class |
38 | musical leadership and experienced professional management, |
39 | coupled with conscientious board oversight and strong financial |
40 | support, is well positioned to maintain its superior musical and |
41 | artistic standard, NOW, THEREFORE, |
