House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing The Florida Orchestra, Inc., on
3the occasion of its 40th anniversary.

5     WHEREAS, founded in 1967, The Florida Orchestra, Inc., has
6been serving the Tampa-Clearwater-St. Petersburg community as
7one of the premier regional orchestras in the United States and
8the largest professional performing arts organization in Central
9Florida, and
10     WHEREAS, The Florida Orchestra, Inc., is a state-designated
11major cultural institution that receives widespread support from
12the community and owes its continued success and growing
13strength as a major cultural asset to the Tampa Bay community,
14the region, and the state, and
15     WHEREAS, The Florida Orchestra, Inc., was founded and
16incorporated 40 years ago as the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony
17when the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and the Tampa
18Philharmonic agreed to merge, naming Irwin Hoffman as its first
19music director, and
20     WHEREAS, American Record Guide named The Florida Orchestra,
21Inc., "the best orchestra in the Southeast, on the level of the
22San Francisco Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas," and was the
23first symphony orchestra to be invited to and perform at the NFL
24Super Bowl under Maestro Jahja Ling, and
25     WHEREAS, after an extensive international search, the
26highly regarded Stefan Sanderling was named Music Director of
27The Florida Orchestra, Inc., in May 2002, and
28     WHEREAS, Stefan Sanderling studied at the Leipzig
29Conservatory and the University of Southern California and led
30prestigious orchestras throughout Europe and the United States,
31including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony
32Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the Orchestra de Bretagne,
33and the Philharmonic Orchestra, among many others, and has
34extended his contract with The Florida Orchestra, Inc., through
35the 2011 season, and
36     WHEREAS, now in its 40th year, The Florida Orchestra, Inc.,
37continues to gain strength and popularity and, with world class
38musical leadership and experienced professional management,
39coupled with conscientious board oversight and strong financial
40support, is well positioned to maintain its superior musical and
41artistic standard, NOW, THEREFORE,

43Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
44Florida:

46     That The Florida Orchestra, Inc., is congratulated on the
47occasion of its 40th anniversary and recognized for its success
48as a world class musical organization.
