  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to education; authorizing

  3         district school boards to establish a school,

  4         class, or educational program in which

  5         enrollment is limited to pupils of a single

  6         gender; providing conditions to such

  7         authorization; requiring that pupils'

  8         participation in single-gender classes be

  9         voluntary; providing an effective date.

11  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

12  

13         Section 1.  Single-gender schools, classes, and

14  programs authorized.--

15         (1)  Subject to subsection (2), a district school board

16  may establish and maintain a school, class, or program within

17  a school in which enrollment is limited to pupils of a single

18  gender if the school district also makes available to pupils a

19  coeducational school, class, or program that has substantially

20  equal academic standards and a school, class, or program for

21  pupils of the other gender which has substantially equal

22  academic standards.

23         (2)  If a district school board establishes a

24  single-gender school, class, or program as described in

25  subsection (1), the school district may not require

26  participation by any of its pupils in the single-gender

27  school, class, or program. The school board must ensure that

28  participation by pupils in a single-gender school, class, or

29  program is wholly voluntary.

30         Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2007.
