  1                      A bill to be entitled

  2         An act relating to the Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr.,

  3         Alzheimer's Center and Research Institute;

  4         amending s. 1004.445, F.S.; reducing the annual

  5         appropriation to the Grants and Donations Trust

  6         Fund within the Department of Elderly Affairs

  7         for the purpose of conducting research and

  8         carrying on other activities at the Johnnie B.

  9         Byrd, Sr., Alzheimer's Center and Research

10         Institute; providing an effective date.

12  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

13  

14         Section 1.  Subsection (12) of section 1004.445,

15  Florida Statutes, is amended to read:

16         1004.445  Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr., Alzheimer's Center and

17  Research Institute.--

18         (12)  Beginning in fiscal year 2007-2008 2006-2007, the

19  sum of $13.5 $15 million is appropriated annually from

20  recurring funds in the General Revenue Fund to the Grants and

21  Donations Trust Fund within the Department of Elderly Affairs

22  for the Johnnie B. Byrd, Sr., Alzheimer's Center and Research

23  Institute at the University of South Florida for the purposes

24  as provided under paragraph (6)(a), conducting and supporting

25  research, providing institutional research grants and

26  investigator-initiated research grants, developing and

27  operating integrated data projects, and providing assistance

28  to statutorily designated memory disorder clinics as provided

29  under s. 430.502. Not less than 80 percent of the appropriated

30  funds shall be expended for these purposes, and not less than

 1  20 percent of the appropriated funds shall be expended for

 2  peer-reviewed investigator-initiated research grants.

 3         Section 2.  This act shall take effect upon becoming a

 4  law.
