| 30 | specific circumstances, (6) provides a $25,000 exemption for |
| 31 | tangible personal property, and (7) provides for limitations on |
| 32 | assessment increases for real property that is not homestead |
| 33 | property. Further, this revision (8) requires the Legislature to |
| 34 | limit the authority of local governments other than school |
| 35 | districts to increase property taxes, and (9) requires all |
| 36 | county property appraisers or persons responsible for the duties |
| 37 | of a property appraiser in certain counties in which the office |
| 38 | of property appraiser has been abolished to be elected. |
| 39 | In more detail, this revision: |
| 40 | (1) Provides for an additional homestead exemption equal |
| 41 | to 40 percent of the median just value of homestead property in |
| 42 | the county for the prior year for the portion of the assessed |
| 43 | value greater than $50,000. This exemption applies in any year |
| 44 | in which the amount of the exemption exceeds the amount of the |
| 45 | cumulative assessment limitation provided under Save Our Homes. |
| 46 | This exemption does not apply to school district levies. |
| 47 | (2) Provides for a complete homestead exemption for |
| 48 | certain low-income seniors. Persons 65 or older whose household |
| 49 | income is less than $23,604, adjusted annually for inflation, |
| 50 | and who have lived in their homestead for at least 20 years will |
| 51 | be totally exempt from ad valorem taxes, including school taxes. |
