House Resolution
2A resolution remembering and honoring former Florida State
3University President Dr. Bernard F. Sliger.
4
5     WHEREAS, Florida State University President Emeritus Dr.
6Bernard F. Sliger, who served as the university's tenth
7president, died on October 10, 2007, at 83 years of age, and
8     WHEREAS, a native of Trout Creek, Michigan, Dr. Sliger held
9three degrees from Michigan State University, bachelor's,
10master's, and doctorate degrees in economics, and
11     WHEREAS, Dr. Sliger's educational career included 19 years
12as an economics professor and administrator at Louisiana State
13University and 4 years as Florida State University's executive
14vice president and chief academic officer, and
15     WHEREAS, Dr. Sliger was one of Florida State University's
16most outstanding presidents who, with his unique combination of
17intelligence and enthusiasm, promoted higher academic standards
18and the growth of each faculty member, staff member, and
19student, and
20     WHEREAS, during Dr. Sliger's tenure as president of Florida
21State University, from 1977 to 1991 and on an interim basis in
221993 and 1994, student enrollment increased by nearly one-third,
23the university was awarded the National High Magnetic Field
24Laboratory and acquired three supercomputers, an engineering
25school was restored there in conjunction with Florida
26Agricultural and Mechanical University, and the university
27became the ninth member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and
28     WHEREAS, much loved by the university community and known
29to faculty and students alike as "Bernie," Dr. Sliger was a
30constant presence on the Florida State University campus,
31chatting with students, faculty, and staff in his easy-going
32manner about policies, plans, and complaints, giving everyone
33the sense of having contributed to the decisions he ultimately
34made, and
35     WHEREAS, Dr. Sliger will be remembered as a college
36president like no other, with his self-deprecating wit, his keen
37intellect, his common-man tastes, and his great humanity and
38love for people, and
39     WHEREAS, Dr. Sliger is survived by Greta, his wife of 62
40years, and their four children and eight grandchildren, NOW,
41THEREFORE,

43Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
44Florida:

46     That Florida State University President Emeritus Dr.
47Bernard F. Sliger is hereby remembered and honored for his
48contributions to Florida State University and its faculty,
49staff, and students.
50     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
51presented to Mrs. Greta Sliger as a tangible token of the
52sentiments expressed herein.
