1	House Resolution
2	A resolution remembering and honoring former Florida State
3	University President Dr. Bernard F. Sliger.
4
5	WHEREAS, Florida State University President Emeritus Dr.
6	Bernard F. Sliger, who served as the university's tenth
7	president, died on October 10, 2007, at 83 years of age, and
8	WHEREAS, a native of Trout Creek, Michigan, Dr. Sliger held
9	three degrees from Michigan State University, bachelor's,
10	master's, and doctorate degrees in economics, and
11	WHEREAS, Dr. Sliger's educational career included 19 years
12	as an economics professor and administrator at Louisiana State
13	University and 4 years as Florida State University's executive
14	vice president and chief academic officer, and
15	WHEREAS, Dr. Sliger was one of Florida State University's
16	most outstanding presidents who, with his unique combination of
17	intelligence and enthusiasm, promoted higher academic standards
18	and the growth of each faculty member, staff member, and
19	student, and
20	WHEREAS, during Dr. Sliger's tenure as president of Florida
21	State University, from 1977 to 1991 and on an interim basis in
22	1993 and 1994, student enrollment increased by nearly one-third,
23	the university was awarded the National High Magnetic Field
24	Laboratory and acquired three supercomputers, an engineering
25	school was restored there in conjunction with Florida
26	Agricultural and Mechanical University, and the university
27	became the ninth member of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and
28	WHEREAS, much loved by the university community and known
29	to faculty and students alike as "Bernie," Dr. Sliger was a
30	constant presence on the Florida State University campus,
31	chatting with students, faculty, and staff in his easy-going
32	manner about policies, plans, and complaints, giving everyone
33	the sense of having contributed to the decisions he ultimately
34	made, and
35	WHEREAS, Dr. Sliger will be remembered as a college
36	president like no other, with his self-deprecating wit, his keen
37	intellect, his common-man tastes, and his great humanity and
38	love for people, and
39	WHEREAS, Dr. Sliger is survived by Greta, his wife of 62
40	years, and their four children and eight grandchildren, NOW,
41	THEREFORE,

43	Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
44	Florida:

46	That Florida State University President Emeritus Dr.
47	Bernard F. Sliger is hereby remembered and honored for his
48	contributions to Florida State University and its faculty,
49	staff, and students.
50	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
51	presented to Mrs. Greta Sliger as a tangible token of the
52	sentiments expressed herein.
