Senate Resolution

A resolution recognizing the AARP on its 50th Anniversary.

     WHEREAS, AARP is a voluntary, nonprofit, nonpartisan

5

membership organization that has a 50-year history of leading

6

positive social change by harnessing the individual and

7

collective power of its members to improve the lives of residents

8

of the United States and Florida as they age, and

9

     WHEREAS, AARP has, since its establishment in 1958 by

10

retired educator Ethel Percy Andrus, taken as its motto "To

11

serve, not to be served," and

12

     WHEREAS, AARP's "army of useful citizens" in Florida

13

includes more than 3,200 volunteers who offer courses in money

14

management, assistance in tax preparation, safe driving courses,

15

advocacy services, job training, intergenerational education,

16

community rebuilding, home visitation, and nonpartisan voter

17

education, and

18

     WHEREAS, AARP has amplified its members' voices on issues of

19

statewide importance such as high quality and affordable health

20

care, lifetime financial security, and consumer protection, and

21

     WHEREAS, AARP has helped to foster proactive policies that

22

enable Florida residents to achieve the quality of life and peace

23

of mind they deserve, and

24

     WHEREAS, AARP exemplifies the belief that diversity in age,

25

economic status, attitudes, ability, and lifestyles is a source

26

of strength for the state and nation, and

27

     WHEREAS, AARP works to develop strong communities that are

28

characterized by affordable and appropriate housing, ease of

29

mobility, and features and services that support the lives and

30

lifestyles of people of all ages, and

31

     WHEREAS, having successfully built alliances statewide among

32

businesses, communities, and Florida's residents of all

33

generations, AARP continues to work towards an economic

34

environment that supports and promotes the potential of mature

35

workers, and

36

     WHEREAS, AARP recognizes that ensuring the safety,

37

involvement, health, and well-being of residents 50 years of age

38

and older is not a destination but a continuing journey, NOW,

39

THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

     That the Senate congratulates the AARP for 50 years of

44

service to this state and nation and for championing the future

45

of every generation.
