A resolution recognizing March 19, 2008, as "Go Red For

Women Day" in Florida.

WHEREAS, cardiovascular diseases are the nation's leading
6
cause of death among women, and
7
WHEREAS, though only 13 percent of women consider
8
cardiovascular disease their greatest health risk, cardiovascular
9
diseases claim the lives of over 460,000 American women each
10
year, more than the total number of cardiovascular-disease-
11
related deaths in men or the next four causes of death in women
12
combined, and
13
WHEREAS, in 2008, the estimated direct and indirect costs of
14
cardiovascular diseases and stroke in the United States is
15
estimated at over $430 billion, and
16
WHEREAS, the "Go Red For Women" campaign encourages women to
17
learn about the signs and symptoms of cardiovascular diseases
18
using tools such as the "Go Red For Women" Heart CheckUp and
19
Choose To Move Countdown and by having an open dialogue with
20
their healthcare providers, and
21
WHEREAS, the goals of the "Go Red For Women" campaign of
22
increasing awareness and empowering women with the knowledge and
23
tools to reduce their risk for cardiovascular diseases can save
24
thousands of lives each year, NOW, THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

That, in recognition of the importance of the ongoing fight
29
against cardiovascular diseases, March 19, 2008, is recognized as
30
"Go Red For Women Day" in the State of Florida and all residents
31
are encouraged to show their support for women and the fight
32
against cardiovascular diseases by commemorating this day with
33
the wearing of the color red.
