     Section 11.  Subsection (1) of section 1002.69, Florida

9

Statutes, is amended to read:

     1002.69  Statewide kindergarten screening; kindergarten

11

readiness rates.--

     (1)  The department shall adopt a statewide kindergarten

13

screening that assesses the readiness of each student for

14

kindergarten based upon the performance standards adopted by the

15

department under s. 1002.67(1) for the Voluntary Prekindergarten

16

Education Program. The screening shall include, as one criteria

17

for kindergarten readiness, the ability to communicate in the

18

English language. The department shall require that each school

19

district administer the statewide kindergarten screening to each

20

kindergarten student in the school district within the first 30

21

school days of each school year.
