Senate Resolution

A resolution commending The Links, Incorporated, for its

3

work in Florida.

     WHEREAS, The Links, Incorporated, is a highly respected

6

international organization of more than 10,000 professional,

7

accomplished, and dedicated women of African ancestry in 274

8

chapters located in 42 states and three countries with a mission

9

and purpose of friendship and community service, and

10

     WHEREAS, members of The Links are role models, mentors,

11

activists, and volunteers who work toward purposeful public

12

service with educational, cultural, and civic commitments through

13

four functional facets - International Trends and Services,

14

National Trends and Services, the Arts, and Services to Youth,

15

and

16

     WHEREAS, the National Trends and Services facet of The

17

Links, Incorporated, also encompasses service related to three

18

Linkages, including Education, Health and Wellness, and

19

legislative work, which highlights and addresses concerns of the

20

organization in these areas and also affects African Americans

21

and society, and

22

     WHEREAS, major issues and needs that concern the Southern

23

Area of The Links, Incorporated, include eliminating health

24

disparities in conformity with the federal Healthy People 2010

25

program, which establishes national health objectives designed to

26

identify the most significant preventable threats to the health

27

of African Americans, and targeting six focus areas that

28

disproportionately affect the health of African Americans -

29

infant mortality, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes,

30

HIV/AIDS, and immunizations, and

31

     WHEREAS, Links from around the State of Florida have

32

assembled today to demonstrate their support for the elimination

33

of health disparities, to thank members of the Florida

34

Legislature for their wisdom and prudent action in addressing

35

health and wellness in terms of societal need, and to encourage

36

Legislators to monitor, implement, and seek progress through this

37

important legislation, and

     WHEREAS, Senator Frederica Wilson, Senator Mandy Dawson, and

39

Senator Arthenia Joyner are members of The Links, Incorporated,

40

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

43

     That this body does pause in its deliberations to pay its

45

respects to the dedicated efforts and example of the Southern

46

Area of The Links, Incorporated, led by Margaret Thompson

47

Johnson, in their successful campaign for the advancement and

48

accomplishment of equitable health care policy and services for

49

all Floridians, and to recognize the exemplary value of their

50

work toward increasing quality and years of healthy life for the

51

residents of this state.
