Senate Resolution

A resolution recognizing March 19, 2008, as "FAMU Day" at

3

the Florida Legislature.

     WHEREAS, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University

6

(FAMU) was founded in 1887, named a land-grant institution in

7

1891, and designated a university in 1953, and

8

     WHEREAS, FAMU is a 4-year, historically black university,

9

offering undergraduate and graduate programs that seek qualified

10

students from all racial, ethnic, religious, and national groups,

11

and

12

     WHEREAS, for more than 120 years FAMU has provided

13

educational opportunities that have enhanced the quality of life

14

for young men and women from Florida and around the globe, and

15

     WHEREAS, the University consists of 13 colleges and schools

16

as well as two institutes: Arts and Sciences; Education;

17

Engineering Sciences, Technology, and Agriculture; Pharmacy and

18

Pharmaceutical Sciences; Engineering; Allied Health Sciences;

19

Architecture; Business and Industry; General Studies; Journalism

20

and Graphic Communication; Nursing; Law; Graduate Studies and

21

Research; the Environmental Sciences Institute; and the Institute

22

of Public Health, and

23

     WHEREAS, today more African American students earn

24

bachelor's degrees at FAMU than at any other American university,

25

and FAMU is the leading producer of African American PhD's in

26

Physics, and

27

     WHEREAS, FAMU is the nation's top producer of black

28

pharmacists, and the pharmacy program led the state and the

29

nation in 2007 with its 100 percent passage rate on the North

30

American Pharmacy Licensure Examination, and

31

     WHEREAS, the FAMU faculty has more than 300 active grants

32

and contracts from federal, state, and private sources,

33

representing research, community service, and scholarly projects,

34

and

35

     WHEREAS, Business Week Magazine recently recognized FAMU as

36

one of the "Most Innovative Colleges" in the country in the area

37

of technology transfer, and

38

     WHEREAS, FAMU MBA students won first place at the 2007

39

National Black MBA Association Case Competition, besting teams

40

from Columbia University and the University of Chicago, and

41

     WHEREAS, in November 2007, FAMU captured its seventh

42

consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Volleyball

43

Championship title, NOW, THEREFORE,

44

45

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

46

47

     That the Florida Senate recognizes March 19, 2008, as "FAMU

48

Day" in the Florida Legislature in recognition of Florida

49

Agricultural and Mechanical University's contributions as an

50

outstanding institution of higher education.

51

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution, with

52

the seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Dr. James H.

53

Ammons, President of Florida Agricultural and Mechanical

54

University, as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida

55

Senate.
