A resolution recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded at
5
Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, and
6
WHEREAS, this Greek letter organization is the first
7
sorority established by African American college women, and
8
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., will be a century
9
old January 2008, thereby earning the designation as
10
"Centennial," and
11
WHEREAS, this sorority is an international organization that
12
has approximately 250,000 members in more than 900 chapters
13
extending across the United States, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Great
14
Britain, Germany, Korea, and the Virgin Islands, and
15
WHEREAS, many of these chapters are located in communities
16
and on college and university campuses in the State of Florida,
17
and
18
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is committed to
19
community service and has made numerous contributions to the
20
educational, civic, and social lives of Florida's residents, and
21
WHEREAS, Barbara McKinzie of Chicago, Illinois, is the
22
Centennial International President of this great sisterhood and
23
leads the 250,000 women of this organization in the current
24
international program, "The SPIRIT of AKA," the acronym and
25
concept for Sisterhood, Service, Partnership, Innovation,
26
Respect, Involvement, and Technology, and
27
WHEREAS, Ella Springs Jones is the Centennial South Atlantic
28
Regional Director of this great sisterhood and leads members of
29
the sorority in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, and
30
WHEREAS, the largest chapter in Florida is Gamma Zeta Omega,
31
located in Miami, and
32
WHEREAS, Senator Frederica S. Wilson, a past South Atlantic
33
Regional Director, and Senator Mandy Dawson are members of Alpha
34
Kappa Alpha Sorority, and
35
WHEREAS, members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in the
36
State of Florida contribute thousands of volunteer hours
37
implementing service programs in their respective communities,

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

That the members of the Florida Senate recognize the
43
commitment of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., to
44
community service and express special appreciation for their
45
service in the State of Florida.
