A bill to be entitled

An act relating to nutrition services in elementary and

3

secondary public schools; requiring each public school to

4

make the nutritional value of meals served in the

5

cafeteria available to the public; providing nutritional

6

standards for food that is available to school children on

7

school campuses; requiring the Governor's Council on

8

Physical Fitness to study the effects of high-fructose

9

corn syrup on school children; requiring the council to

10

submit an annual report to the Governor and Legislature;

11

providing an effective date.

Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

14

     Section 1. Regulation of food sold or prepared on public

16

school campuses.--

     (1) Each public elementary, middle, and high school in this

18

state shall post in a conspicuous place in its cafeteria and on

19

the school website the nutritional value of every meal served in

20

the cafeteria. Such posting must be accessible to the parent or

21

guardian of each student.

     (2) Each public middle school shall reduce snack items and

23

drinks sold in vending machines which contain high-fructose corn

24

syrup and increase the number of healthier items sold in vending

25

machines, such as vegetable juice, 100 percent fruit juice having

26

natural sugars, and drinking water.

     (3) In order to reduce the risk of diabetes and other

28

health abnormalities in children, the school cafeteria in each

29

public elementary, middle, and high school shall serve meals that

30

are low in trans fat and shall offer whole-wheat food products.

     Section 2. The Governor's Council on Physical Fitness shall

32

study the effects of high-fructose corn syrup on children in

33

grades 7-12 and issue an annual report by December 15, 2009, and

34

each year thereafter, stating its findings, conclusions, and

35

recommendations. The council shall submit its reports to the

36

Governor, the President of the Senate, and the Speaker of the

37

House of Representatives.

     Section 3.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2008.
