An act relating to district school board duties; providing

a short title; amending s. 1006.07, F.S.; requiring that,

4

beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, each school

5

district provide access to suicide prevention education

6

for all instructional and administrative staff using

7

resources approved by the Statewide Office of Suicide

8

Prevention; providing an effective date.

Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

     Section 1. This act may be cited as the "Protect Florida's

13

Youth Act."

     Section 2.  Subsection (7) is added to section 1006.07,

15

Florida Statutes, to read:

16

     1006.07  District school board duties relating to student

17

discipline and school safety.--The district school board shall

18

provide for the proper accounting for all students, for the

19

attendance and control of students at school, and for proper

20

attention to health, safety, and other matters relating to the

21

welfare of students, including:

(7) SUICIDE PREVENTION EDUCATION.--Beginning with the 2008-

23

2009 school year, each district shall provide access to suicide

24

prevention education for all instructional and administrative

25

staff using resources approved by the Statewide Office of Suicide

26

Prevention. This education may be accomplished through a review

27

by district staff of suitable education materials relating to

28

youth suicide prevention, bullying prevention, or mental health.

29

     Section 3.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2008.
