Senate Memorial

2

A memorial to the Congress of the United States, urging

3

Congress to support revisions of federal immigration

4

policies in order to provide Temporary Protective Status

5

for Haitians fleeing their home country because of

6

political, religious, and other recognized persecution and

7

to support the humane and just treatment of Haitian

8

immigrants.

9

10

WHEREAS, the United States of America is known worldwide as

11

the land of the free and has provided sanctuary and new

12

beginnings for people from around the world, and

13

WHEREAS, today thousands of individuals flee civil unrest

14

and political persecution in their home countries in search of

15

basic freedoms and take enormous risks in their attempt to reach

16

America, seeking a safe haven, and

17

WHEREAS, under the current federal policy, certain refugees

18

who reach United States soil are granted "Credible Fear

19

Interviews" and are often paroled in the Unites States, but

20

Haitian immigrants are incarcerated indefinitely in detention

21

facilities and denied any meaningful opportunity to present their

22

cases in a court of law, and

23

WHEREAS, the current federal policy is unfair,

24

discriminatory, and inhumane and should be revised to provide

25

Temporary Protective Status for persons fleeing Haiti, NOW,

26

THEREFORE,

27

28

Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

29

30

That the Congress of the United States is urged to support

31

revisions of federal immigration policies which will provide

32

Temporary Protective Status in this country for Haitians who are

33

fleeing their home country because of political, religious, and

34

other recognized persecution and which will otherwise support the

35

humane and just treatment of Haitian immigrants.

36

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be

37

dispatched to the President of the United States, to the

38

President of the United States Senate, to the Speaker of the

39

United States House of Representatives, and to each member of the

40

Florida delegation to the United States Congress.
