Senate Resolution

A resolution recognizing the Pharmaceutical Research and

3

Manufacturers of America on the 20th Anniversary of its

4

Discoverers Award program.

     WHEREAS, the scientists in the cutting-edge laboratories of

7

America's pharmaceutical research companies create most of the

8

world's new medicines, which benefit tens of millions of

9

patients, and

10

     WHEREAS, because of their efforts, more than 2,500 medicines

11

are in development today to give patients more therapeutic

12

options, and

13

     WHEREAS, these potential new treatments include

14

pharmaceuticals for treating cancer, Alzheimer's disease,

15

infectious disease, heart disease, arthritis, stroke, diabetes,

16

obesity, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, and many other life-threatening

17

and debilitating diseases and medical conditions, and

18

     WHEREAS, the men and women who discover and create these

19

medicines deserve recognition for their life-saving and life-

20

enhancing accomplishments, and

21

     WHEREAS, each year for the past 20 years the Discoverers

22

Award program of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of

23

America has honored scientists whose tireless research and

24

development of new pharmaceuticals have greatly benefited

25

patients all over the world, and

26

     WHEREAS, through the years, recipients of the Discoverers

27

Award have included the creators of vital new medicines for

28

treating life-threatening infections, chronic myeloid leukemia,

29

rheumatoid arthritis, and AIDS, for preventing rejections of

30

transplants, and for lowering cholesterol, NOW, THEREFORE,

31

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

33

     That the Senate recognizes the Pharmaceutical Research and

35

Manufacturers of America and its Discoverers Award program, and

36

applauds the life-giving and life-saving research accomplishments

37

of the scientists recognized by the program over these 20 years.

38

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with

39

the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to the

40

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America as a

41

tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
