Senate Resolution

2

A resolution recognizing the week of June 23-27, 2008, as

3

"Humane Society Appreciation Week" in Florida.

4

5

WHEREAS, there are currently 48 humane societies in the

6

State of Florida, serving 40 counties in the struggle with

7

domestic animal overpopulation, and

8

WHEREAS, humane societies work to promote animal adoption

9

and education, eliminate animal overpopulation, prevent animal

10

cruelty, and relieve animal suffering, and

11

WHEREAS, humane societies have diligently served many

12

Florida communities for as many as 45 years, and

13

WHEREAS, the estimated population of more than 800,000

14

unwanted and stray animals euthanized in Florida each year

15

constitutes a potential health risk for rabies and other

16

contagious diseases in this state, and

17

WHEREAS, in 2007, humane societies served to locate

18

permanent homes for many thousands of unwanted animals and

19

promoted regional spay/neuter campaigns as a preventive and

20

responsible measure for controlling the animal overpopulation in

21

Florida, and

22

WHEREAS, humane societies are staffed by an estimated 10,000

23

Florida residents who unselfishly volunteer their time, energy,

24

and expertise to alleviate the suffering of animals and to deal

25

responsibly with the problems created by stray animal

26

overpopulation, NOW, THEREFORE,

27

28

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

29

30

That the Senate commends the humane societies across this

31

state for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the

32

people and animals of Florida and for setting an example for

33

responsible human behavior toward animals.

34

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the week of June 23-27, 2008, is

35

recognized as "Humane Society Appreciation Week" in Florida.
