Senate Resolution

2

A resolution recognizing April 2008 as Cancer Control

3

Awareness Month in Florida.

4

5

WHEREAS, cancer will strike approximately one out of two men

6

and about one out of every three women in the course of their

7

lives, and

8

WHEREAS, cancer accounts for one out every four deaths, and is

9

the second-leading cause of death in the United States, and

10

WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that more

11

than 101,920 new cases of cancer in Florida will be diagnosed and

12

more than 41,660 Floridians will die from cancer in 2008, and

13

WHEREAS, many cancers can be prevented by lifestyle changes

14

or cured if detected early and treated promptly, and

15

WHEREAS, as many as one-third of the cancer deaths occurring

16

each year are related to nutrition, physical inactivity, obesity,

17

and other lifestyle factors, and thus might have been prevented,

18

and

19

WHEREAS, almost half of all individuals who continue to

20

smoke may expect to die prematurely from lung cancer or other

21

tobacco-related diseases, and

22

WHEREAS, 30 percent of all cancer deaths and 87 percent of

23

all lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking cigarettes or other

24

tobacco products, and

25

WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for all cancers combined

26

is 66 percent, but survival rates may increase even more for

27

certain cancers such as breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers

28

if they are detected and treated early, and

29

WHEREAS, rates of cancer incidence and death in Florida may

30

be significantly reduced through increased awareness of the

31

American Cancer Society's cancer-screening guidelines and

32

compliance with those guidelines, and

33

WHEREAS, promotion of Cancer Control Awareness Month and

34

statewide cancer-control initiatives, such as the Florida

35

Dialogue on Cancer sponsored by the American Cancer Society, may

36

assist Florida in significantly reducing the burden of cancer

37

that Floridians and the state currently confront, NOW, THEREFORE,

38

39

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

40

41

That the Senate recognizes the month of April 2008 as

42

"Cancer Control Awareness Month" in Florida and urges all

43

Floridians to understand the risks associated with cancer, to

44

change behaviors that increase their cancer risks, and to follow

45

the American Cancer Society cancer-screening guidelines.
