Senate Resolution

2

A resolution honoring Florida author Alex Flinn.

3

4

WHEREAS, Alex Flinn is the author of seven novels for young

5

people which have been widely acclaimed by reviewers across the

6

United States, and

7

WHEREAS, many of her books have made the American Library

8

Association's "Best Books for Young Adults" list, as well as

9

"Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers," intended for

10

teens who might not be eager to read, and

11

WHEREAS, three of Alex Flinn's books - "Breathing

12

Underwater," "Nothing to Lose," and "Fade to Black" - have

13

received such teen-selected honors as being named to the

14

International Reading Association's Young Adult Choices list, and

15

WHEREAS, Alex Flinn's books have also been nominated for

16

state awards, "Breathing Underwater" won the Maryland Black-Eyed

17

Susan Award in 2004, and "Beastly" is nominated for the 2009 Lone

18

Star State (Texas) Award, and

19

WHEREAS, Alex Flinn's novels, in hardcover and paperback, have

20

sold hundreds of thousands of copies throughout North America, and

21

her books have been translated into many foreign languages and sold

22

internationally, and

23

WHEREAS, few writers for young people have captured so well

24

the images of contemporary Florida, both the Florida of dreams

25

and the reality of its cosmopolitan population, and her newest

26

novel, "A Kiss in Time," set in the glamorous Florida of today,

27

will be published nationally by Harper Collins in 2009, and

28

WHEREAS, Alex Flinn's profound concern for today's young

29

people and the often torturous choices they must make to meet

30

society's demands are unique in the publishing industry, and her

31

ability to address the role of the arts in young people's lives

32

is part of her passionate message, and

33

WHEREAS, Alex Flinn's novels appeal to teens who are not

34

already avid readers and thus open up the world of reading to

35

innumerable young Floridians, NOW, THEREFORE,

36

37

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

38

39

That the Senate honors and commends the literary

40

accomplishments of Alex Flinn and applauds in particular her

41

ability to reach young people through novels that confront and

42

help them meet the issues and challenges in their lives.

43

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with

44

the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Alex Flinn as a

45

tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida Senate.
