Senate Resolution

A resolution honoring Dr. Bradford E. Brown, civil rights

3

activist, trailblazer, and community leader.

     WHEREAS, Dr. Bradford E. Brown received his Bachelor of

6

Science degree from Cornell University, his Master of Science

7

degree from Auburn University, and his Ph.D from Oklahoma State

8

University, developing his research expertise in statistics and

9

quantitative assessments of the effects of fishing on marine

10

resources, and

11

     WHEREAS, Dr. Brown has worked extensively in an effort to

12

increase the diversity of the fisheries profession, was awarded

13

the mentorship award by the Equal Opportunity Section of the

14

American Fisheries Society, and has received significant

15

recognition for his work with Historically Black Colleges and

16

Universities in expanding opportunities in marine science, and

17

     WHEREAS, Dr. Brown is currently under contract with the

18

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to provide

19

technical assistance to the United Nations Development Program-

20

World Bank Global Environmental Facility Large Marine Ecosystem

21

projects in Africa and the Caribbean, and

22

     WHEREAS, with a 43-year track record of civil rights

23

activism, Dr. Brown served as Vice President of the New England

24

State Conference of Branches of the National Association for the

25

Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); served two terms as

26

President of the Miami-Dade NAACP; and is currently the First

27

Vice President of, and served on three different State Advisory

28

Committees to, the United States Civil Rights Commission,

29

chairing both the Massachusetts and Florida committees, and

30

     WHEREAS, Dr. Brown is a past chair of the Miami-Dade

31

Community Relations Board and currently co-chairs its Police-

32

Community Working Group; was a Board member of the Metro Miami

33

Action Plan Trust (MMAP) and served as its Vice Chair; is a

34

member of the Board of Directors for HOPE, Inc., Miami-Dade's

35

fair housing organization; served on the Bi-Tri Committee,

36

advising the Federal Judge on Dade School desegregation; and is

37

now on the School Board committee on Diversity, Equity, and

38

Excellence, and

39

     WHEREAS, Dr. Brown is a member and Deacon of the Church of

40

the Open Door in Liberty City, is a 23-year resident of the South

41

Dade community, and is a member of the King of Clubs of Greater

42

Miami, the oldest African-American based service club in Miami-

43

Dade County, and

44

     WHEREAS, Dr. Brown and his wife, Mable Brown, have one son,

45

Jabari Brown, a graduate of Miami-Dade Public Schools and now a

46

student at Tufts University, NOW, THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

49

     That the Florida Senate recognizes the achievements,

51

dedication, and leadership of Dr. Bradford E. Brown in his

52

scientific profession and as a civil rights activist,

53

trailblazer, and community leader.

54

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution, with

55

the Seal of the Senate affixed, be presented to Dr. Bradford E.

56

Brown as a tangible token of the sentiments of the Florida

57

Senate.
