A resolution recognizing October 4, 2007, as the 50th

anniversary of space flight and supporting the nation's

4

Vision for Space Exploration.

     WHEREAS, October 4, 2007, the 50th anniversary of space

7

flight, is a monumental event in the history of our state,

8

nation, and world, and

9

     WHEREAS, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration

10

(NASA) is celebrating its 50th anniversary in space and in this

11

state, and

12

     WHEREAS, for more than 50 years, this state has been the

13

world's premier spaceport for human exploration and commerce in

14

space, and

15

     WHEREAS, it is imperative that this state retain its status

16

as the world's premier spaceport, and

17

     WHEREAS, the space industry has a direct economic influence

18

in this state amounting to billions of dollars annually and

19

generates tens of thousands of high-paying jobs throughout the

20

state, and

21

     WHEREAS, the United States is a nation of explorers and has

22

led the world in exploring outer space, and

23

     WHEREAS, space exploration benefits all humankind by

24

fostering the development of new technologies for everyday and

25

commercial use, by creating new high-technology jobs that make

26

valuable contributions to the economy, and by improving the

27

quality of life around the world, and

28

     WHEREAS, the national Vision for Space Exploration is a new

29

strategy in charting a course to explore destinations across the

30

solar system, provide the nation with a competitive edge in

31

worldwide space commerce, and enhance national security, and

32

     WHEREAS, the Vision for Space Exploration, continuing a

33

course that was born in this state and includes 50 years of

34

launches viewed by millions of people, includes plans for new

35

space shuttle missions that will complete construction of the

36

international space station, return humans to the moon, and

37

extend humankind's presence to Mars and beyond, NOW, THEREFORE,

38

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

40

     That the Florida Senate recognizes October 4, 2007, as the

42

50th anniversary of space flight and wholeheartedly supports the

43

nation's Vision for Space Exploration.
