An act relating to automated external defibrillators in

public schools; amending s. 1006.165, F.S.; requiring that

all public schools have an operational automated external
5
defibrillator on school grounds; providing an effective
6
date.

Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

Section 1. Section 1006.165, Florida Statutes, is amended
11
to read:

1006.165 Automated external defibrillator; user training.--
13
(1) Each public school that is a member of the Florida High
14
School Athletic Association must have an operational automated
15
external defibrillator on the school grounds. Public and private
16
partnerships are encouraged to cover the cost associated with the
17
purchase and placement of the defibrillator and training in the
18
use of the defibrillator.

(2) Each school must ensure that all employees or
20
volunteers who are reasonably expected to use the device obtain
21
appropriate training, including completion of a course in
22
cardiopulmonary resuscitation or a basic first aid course that
23
includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation training, and demonstrated
24
proficiency in the use of an automated external defibrillator.

(3) The location of each automated external defibrillator
26
must be registered with a local emergency medical services
27
medical director.

(4) The use of automated external defibrillators by
29
employees and volunteers is covered under ss. 768.13 and

Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2008.
