A resolution designating April 9, 2008, as "Filipino-
American Friendship Day" in Florida.

WHEREAS, forced to take their last stand on the Bataan
Peninsula and the island of Corregidor in the Philippines during
World War II, more than 80,000 joint Filipino-American forces
resisted the Japanese as effectively as circumstances would
allow and, for as long as humanly possible, delayed Japan's
advances throughout the Pacific, and
WHEREAS, outgunned, ill-fed, half-sick, and worn thin,
these forces successfully fought the Japanese to a standstill
until Bataan fell on April 9, 1942, and
WHEREAS, the battles at Bataan and Corregidor are credited
with having upset the 1941-1942 timetable of the Japanese
conquest of the Philippines by about four months, and
WHEREAS, the prolonged defense of Bataan and Corregidor
saved Australia and contributed to the Americans' ultimate
victory, and
WHEREAS, Bataan and Corregidor have been immortalized and
recognized as bastions of democracy, earning respect and
admiration for Americans and Filipinos worldwide, NOW,
THEREFORE,

Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
Florida:
