House Resolution
2A resolution honoring the life of Adelle Vaughn-Jemison
3and recognizing her devoted service and valuable
4contributions to her community and its children.
5
6     WHEREAS, Adelle Vaughn-Jemison, an Ocala native and well-
7known educator and activist in Pinellas County, died on November
819, 2007, at 77 years of age, and
9     WHEREAS, for nearly 40 years, Adelle Vaughn-Jemison devoted
10her life to equality, children, and education, serving as a
11child welfare worker for the City of St. Petersburg, a social
12worker for the Pinellas County School System, and an assistant
13superintendent for the school system's Office of Equal
14Opportunity, and
15     WHEREAS, in 1968, after a St. Petersburg sanitation
16workers' strike, Adelle Vaughn-Jemison helped found the St.
17Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce's Community Alliance, an
18organization charged with bridging the gap between the city's
19white and black residents, and
20     WHEREAS, while tackling inequality in the school system,
21Adelle Vaughn-Jemison became involved in promoting public safety
22and, in 1979, joined the St. Petersburg Police Department's
23Community Police Council where she remained an active member
24until her death, and
25     WHEREAS, in 2002, Adelle Vaughn-Jemison helped form the
26Concerned Organizations for Quality Education for Black
27Students, a St. Petersburg group which continues to work with
28the Pinellas County School District to narrow the academic
29achievement gap between the district's white and black students,
30NOW, THEREFORE,

32Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
33Florida:

35     That the life of Adelle Vaughn-Jemison is hereby honored
36and that her devoted service and valuable contributions to her
37community and its children are recognized.
