2A resolution recognizing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

4     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded at
5Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, and
6     WHEREAS, this Greek letter organization is the first
7sorority established by African American college women, and
8     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., will be a
9century old January 2008, thereby earning the designation as
10"Centennial," and
11     WHEREAS, this sorority is an international organization
12that has approximately 250,000 members in more than 900 chapters
13extending across the United States, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Great
14Britain, Germany, Korea, and the Virgin Islands, and
15     WHEREAS, many of these chapters are located in communities
16and on college and university campuses in the State of Florida,
17and
18     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., is committed to
19community service and has made numerous contributions to the
20educational, civic, and social lives of Florida's residents, and
21     WHEREAS, Barbara McKinzie of Chicago, Illinois, is the
22Centennial International President of this great sisterhood and
23leads the 250,000 women of this organization in the current
24international program, "The SPIRIT of AKA," the acronym and
25concept for Sisterhood, Service, Partnership, Innovation,
26Respect, Involvement, and Technology, and
27     WHEREAS, Ella Springs Jones is the Centennial South
28Atlantic Regional Director of this great sisterhood and leads
29members of the sorority in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina,
30and
31     WHEREAS, the largest chapter in Florida is Gamma Zeta
32Omega, located in Miami, and
33     WHEREAS, Representative Geraldine F. Thompson and
34Representative Jennifer Carroll are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
35Sorority, Inc., and
36     WHEREAS, members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in the
37State of Florida contribute thousands of volunteer hours
38implementing service programs in their respective communities,
39NOW, THEREFORE,

41Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
42Florida:

44     That the members of the Florida House of Representatives
45recognize the commitment of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
46Sorority, Inc., to community service and express special
47appreciation for their service in the State of Florida.
