2A resolution recognizing September 2008 as "Nicaraguan-
3American Heritage Month" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, Nicaraguan-Americans constitute the second largest
6Hispanic community in the state and one of the largest Hispanic
7communities in Miami-Dade County, and
8     WHEREAS, Miami-Dade County's Nicaraguan population began
9its rapid growth in September of 1972, following an earthquake
10in Managua, Nicaragua, and
11     WHEREAS, the largest group of Nicaraguan immigrants arrived
12in the state in September of 1979, after escaping the communist
13regime in Nicaragua, and
14     WHEREAS, this influx of new citizens has helped contribute
15to the economy of the state and to an increase in trade between
16Florida and Nicaragua, and
17     WHEREAS, Nicaraguan-Americans also contribute significantly
18to the cultural diversity and richness of the state, NOW,
19THEREFORE,

21Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
22Florida:

24     That September 2008 is recognized as "Nicaraguan-American
25Heritage Month" in the State of Florida, and the people of this
26state are called upon to observe the month by participating in
27programs, ceremonies, and activities celebrating the historical
28and cultural contributions of Nicaraguan-Americans.
