5 | WHEREAS, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, also known as |
6 | Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, is a chronic condition |
7 | characterized by severe, burning pain, pathological changes in |
8 | bone and skin, excessive sweating, tissue swelling, and extreme |
9 | sensitivity to touch, and |
10 | WHEREAS, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, or RSD, and Complex |
11 | Regional Pain Syndrome, or CRPS, is most often caused by a |
12 | trauma to the extremities; however, it may also be a consequence |
13 | of sprains, fractures, surgery, damage to blood vessels or |
14 | nerves, and cerebral lesions, and |
15 | WHEREAS, all age groups are susceptible to RSD/CRPS, |
16 | although it is more common in individuals between the ages of 40 |
17 | and 60, particularly women, and in children it is often |
18 | misdiagnosed as a psychiatric condition, and |
19 | WHEREAS, while the treatment of RSD/CRPS is complex, early |
20 | recognition and proper management may lead to the prevention of |
21 | a crippling condition, and |
22 | WHEREAS, employers and health insurance companies are urged |
23 | to recognize RSD/CRPS as a physical disease and not a |
24 | psychological condition, although psychological problems may |
25 | develop as a result of the physical pain associated with |
26 | RSD/CRPS, NOW, THEREFORE, |

28 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
29 | Florida: |

31 | That the House of Representatives designates the month of |
32 | May 2008 as "Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Month" in Florida and |
33 | urges all residents of the state to gain a better understanding |
34 | of the symptoms associated with this disease and the ever- |
35 | present struggles endured by RSD/CRPS sufferers. |
