House Resolution
2A resolution designating May 2008 as "Reflex Sympathetic
3Dystrophy Month" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, also known as
6Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, is a chronic condition
7characterized by severe, burning pain, pathological changes in
8bone and skin, excessive sweating, tissue swelling, and extreme
9sensitivity to touch, and
10     WHEREAS, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, or RSD, and Complex
11Regional Pain Syndrome, or CRPS, is most often caused by a
12trauma to the extremities; however, it may also be a consequence
13of sprains, fractures, surgery, damage to blood vessels or
14nerves, and cerebral lesions, and
15     WHEREAS, all age groups are susceptible to RSD/CRPS,
16although it is more common in individuals between the ages of 40
17and 60, particularly women, and in children it is often
18misdiagnosed as a psychiatric condition, and
19     WHEREAS, while the treatment of RSD/CRPS is complex, early
20recognition and proper management may lead to the prevention of
21a crippling condition, and
22     WHEREAS, employers and health insurance companies are urged
23to recognize RSD/CRPS as a physical disease and not a
24psychological condition, although psychological problems may
25develop as a result of the physical pain associated with
26RSD/CRPS, NOW, THEREFORE,

28Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
29Florida:

31     That the House of Representatives designates the month of
32May 2008 as "Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Month" in Florida and
33urges all residents of the state to gain a better understanding
34of the symptoms associated with this disease and the ever-
35present struggles endured by RSD/CRPS sufferers.
