1	House Resolution
2	A resolution designating March 19, 2008, as "FAMU Day" in
3	Tallahassee.

5	WHEREAS, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University was
6	founded in 1887, named a land-grant institution in 1891, and
7	designated a university in 1953, and
8	WHEREAS, FAMU, a four-year, historically black university
9	offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, seeks
10	qualified students from all racial, ethnic, religious, and
11	national groups, and
12	WHEREAS, for more than 120 years, FAMU has provided
13	immeasurable educational opportunities that have enhanced the
14	quality of life for young men and women from Florida and around
15	the globe, and
16	WHEREAS, academic components of the university consist of
17	13 colleges and schools and two institutes: Arts and Sciences;
18	Education; Engineering Sciences, Technology, and Agriculture;
19	Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Engineering; Allied Health
20	Sciences; Architecture; Business and Industry; General Studies;
21	Journalism and Graphic Communication; Nursing; Law; Graduate
22	Studies and Research; the Environmental Sciences Institute; and
23	the Institute of Public Health, and
24	WHEREAS, FAMU is the top producer of African Americans with
25	baccalaureate degrees and doctoral degrees in physics in the
26	nation, and
27	WHEREAS, FAMU is the top producer of African American
28	pharmacists in the nation, with the pharmacy program leading the
29	state and nation in 2007 with a 100 percent passage rate on the
30	North American Pharmacy Licensure Examination, and
31	WHEREAS, FAMU faculty have more than 300 active grants and
32	contracts from federal, state, and private sources, representing
33	research, community service, and scholarly projects, and
34	WHEREAS, Business Week Magazine recently recognized FAMU as
35	one of the "Most Innovative Colleges" in the country in the area
36	of technology transfer, and
37	WHEREAS, FAMU MBA students won first place at the 2007
38	National Black MBA Association Case Competition, and
39	WHEREAS, FAMU won its seventh consecutive Mid-Eastern
40	Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship in November 2007,
41	NOW, THEREFORE,

43	Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
44	Florida:

46	That the House of Representatives, in recognition of
47	Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University's contributions
48	as an outstanding institution of higher education, proudly
49	designates March 19, 2008, as "FAMU Day" in Tallahassee.
50	BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
51	presented to Dr. James H. Ammons, president of Florida
52	Agricultural and Mechanical University, as a tangible token of
53	the sentiments expressed herein.
