House Resolution
2A resolution designating March 19, 2008, as "FAMU Day" in
3Tallahassee.

5     WHEREAS, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University was
6founded in 1887, named a land-grant institution in 1891, and
7designated a university in 1953, and
8     WHEREAS, FAMU, a four-year, historically black university
9offering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, seeks
10qualified students from all racial, ethnic, religious, and
11national groups, and
12     WHEREAS, for more than 120 years, FAMU has provided
13immeasurable educational opportunities that have enhanced the
14quality of life for young men and women from Florida and around
15the globe, and
16     WHEREAS, academic components of the university consist of
1713 colleges and schools and two institutes: Arts and Sciences;
18Education; Engineering Sciences, Technology, and Agriculture;
19Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Engineering; Allied Health
20Sciences; Architecture; Business and Industry; General Studies;
21Journalism and Graphic Communication; Nursing; Law; Graduate
22Studies and Research; the Environmental Sciences Institute; and
23the Institute of Public Health, and
24     WHEREAS, FAMU is the top producer of African Americans with
25baccalaureate degrees and doctoral degrees in physics in the
26nation, and
27     WHEREAS, FAMU is the top producer of African American
28pharmacists in the nation, with the pharmacy program leading the
29state and nation in 2007 with a 100 percent passage rate on the
30North American Pharmacy Licensure Examination, and
31     WHEREAS, FAMU faculty have more than 300 active grants and
32contracts from federal, state, and private sources, representing
33research, community service, and scholarly projects, and
34     WHEREAS, Business Week Magazine recently recognized FAMU as
35one of the "Most Innovative Colleges" in the country in the area
36of technology transfer, and
37     WHEREAS, FAMU MBA students won first place at the 2007
38National Black MBA Association Case Competition, and
39     WHEREAS, FAMU won its seventh consecutive Mid-Eastern
40Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship in November 2007,
41NOW, THEREFORE,

43Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
44Florida:

46     That the House of Representatives, in recognition of
47Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University's contributions
48as an outstanding institution of higher education, proudly
49designates March 19, 2008, as "FAMU Day" in Tallahassee.
50     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
51presented to Dr. James H. Ammons, president of Florida
52Agricultural and Mechanical University, as a tangible token of
53the sentiments expressed herein.
