House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the commitment of the National
3Women's History Museum and commending that institution on
4its efforts to secure a permanent home on or close to the
5National Mall for a museum to honor the important
6contributions of women in shaping this great nation.

8     WHEREAS, in 1987 Congress declared March to serve as
9"Women's History Month" to acknowledge the important role women
10have played in shaping America, and
11     WHEREAS, although women constitute a majority of the
12nation's population, their achievements and contributions are
13underrepresented in museums and memorials, and
14     WHEREAS, only 3 percent of the people identified in a
15recent survey of 18 history textbooks were women, and
16     WHEREAS, in 1999 The President's Commission on the
17Celebration of Women in American History called for a women's
18history museum to be established on "The National Mall" in
19Washington, D.C., and
20     WHEREAS, the National Women's History Museum, founded in
211996, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, educational institution
22dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and celebrating the
23diverse historic contributions of women and integrating the
24heritage of women fully into this nation's history, and
25     WHEREAS, the National Women's History Museum is seeking a
26site on or close to the National Mall and in close proximity to
27the White House and U.S. Capitol Building, and
28     WHEREAS, the United States Senate voted unanimously in
29favor of S. 501, The National Women's History Museum Act of
302005, a bill that directs the General Services Administration to
31enter into a long-term lease with the National Women's History
32Museum for federal property that has been vacant since 1992, and
33     WHEREAS, the National Women's History Museum will showcase
34the full history of women in the United States and the
35contributions they have made and continue to make in the
36marketplace, arts and sciences, government, entertainment,
37education, home, and community, and
38     WHEREAS, a coalition of 33 women's organizations,
39representing 8 million women and including the National
40Foundation for Women Legislators, has expressed their support of
41the National Women's History Museum's efforts to establish a
42permanent residence on the National Mall, the most prominent
43location for museums to be situated in the nation's capital,
44NOW, THEREFORE,

46Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
47Florida:

49     That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes the
50commitment of the National Women's History Museum and commends
51that institution on its efforts to secure a permanent home on or
52close to the National Mall for a museum to honor the important
53contributions of women in shaping this great nation.
54     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
55presented to the National Foundation for Women Legislators as a
56tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein.
