4 | its efforts to secure a permanent home on or close to the |
5 | National Mall for a museum to honor the important |
6 | contributions of women in shaping this great nation. |

8 | WHEREAS, in 1987 Congress declared March to serve as |
9 | "Women's History Month" to acknowledge the important role women |
10 | have played in shaping America, and |
11 | WHEREAS, although women constitute a majority of the |
12 | nation's population, their achievements and contributions are |
13 | underrepresented in museums and memorials, and |
14 | WHEREAS, only 3 percent of the people identified in a |
15 | recent survey of 18 history textbooks were women, and |
16 | WHEREAS, in 1999 The President's Commission on the |
17 | Celebration of Women in American History called for a women's |
18 | history museum to be established on "The National Mall" in |
19 | Washington, D.C., and |
20 | WHEREAS, the National Women's History Museum, founded in |
21 | 1996, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit, educational institution |
22 | dedicated to preserving, interpreting, and celebrating the |
23 | diverse historic contributions of women and integrating the |
24 | heritage of women fully into this nation's history, and |
25 | WHEREAS, the National Women's History Museum is seeking a |
26 | site on or close to the National Mall and in close proximity to |
27 | the White House and U.S. Capitol Building, and |
28 | WHEREAS, the United States Senate voted unanimously in |
29 | favor of S. 501, The National Women's History Museum Act of |
30 | 2005, a bill that directs the General Services Administration to |
31 | enter into a long-term lease with the National Women's History |
32 | Museum for federal property that has been vacant since 1992, and |
33 | WHEREAS, the National Women's History Museum will showcase |
34 | the full history of women in the United States and the |
35 | contributions they have made and continue to make in the |
36 | marketplace, arts and sciences, government, entertainment, |
37 | education, home, and community, and |
38 | WHEREAS, a coalition of 33 women's organizations, |
39 | representing 8 million women and including the National |
40 | Foundation for Women Legislators, has expressed their support of |
41 | the National Women's History Museum's efforts to establish a |
42 | permanent residence on the National Mall, the most prominent |
43 | location for museums to be situated in the nation's capital, |
44 | NOW, THEREFORE, |

46 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |

49 | That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes the |
50 | commitment of the National Women's History Museum and commends |
51 | that institution on its efforts to secure a permanent home on or |
52 | close to the National Mall for a museum to honor the important |
53 | contributions of women in shaping this great nation. |
54 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
55 | presented to the National Foundation for Women Legislators as a |
56 | tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein. |
