House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing April 9-10, 2008, as "Haitian-
3American Days" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, the House of Representatives takes great pride in
6celebrating and honoring the significance of the Haitian-
7American community in Florida, and
8     WHEREAS, Haitian-American prominence in Florida began in
9the 1970s, following the deterioration of the political and
10economic environment in Haiti under a totalitarian regime, and
11     WHEREAS, as of the year 2000, Florida had the largest
12percentage of Haitian-Americans in the United States, with a
13population of approximately 233,000 Haitian-American citizens,
14and
15     WHEREAS, as a result of the hard work and dedication of its
16pioneer leaders, the Haitian-American community in Florida has
17succeeded in creating stable organizations that serve the
18community in various areas, and
19     WHEREAS, Haitian-Americans have readily assimilated within
20Floridian society and have contributed to the state in the
21political, economic, educational, professional, and cultural
22fields, among others, and
23     WHEREAS, the Haitian-American community in Florida is a
24vital, vibrant part of the state's rich culture and history and
25essential to its future development, NOW, THEREFORE,

27Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
28Florida:

30     That April 9-10, 2008, are recognized as "Haitian-American
31Days" in Florida, and the members of the Haitian-American
32delegation are commended for their continuing efforts to ensure
33a thriving and united Haitian-American community in this state.
34     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
35presented to the Haitian Historical Museum as a tangible token
36of the sentiments expressed herein.
