5 | WHEREAS, Steven L. Abrams assumed office as the 32nd Mayor |
6 | of the City of Boca Raton, Florida, in March 2001 and was |
7 | reelected in 2003 without opposition and in 2005 with the most |
8 | votes cast in the history of the city, and |
9 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams, a recipient of the Philo Sherman |
10 | Bennett Prize for the best government senior thesis, graduated |
11 | magna cum laude in 1980 from Harvard University and received his |
12 | law degree from The George Washington University in 1985, and |
13 | WHEREAS, prior to moving to Florida, Mayor Abrams served in |
14 | the White House as law clerk to the Counsel to President Reagan |
15 | and is a member of the Florida and the District of Columbia |
16 | Bars, and |
17 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams is an attorney in the Boca Raton |
18 | office of the national law firm of Blank Rome LLP, and |
19 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams has lectured at the Florida Atlantic |
20 | University College of Business and was inducted into the |
21 | National Society of Collegiate Scholars as a distinguished |
22 | member by the Florida Atlantic University chapter in 2001, and |
23 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams received the President's Talon |
24 | Leadership Award from Florida Atlantic University in 2003 and |
25 | was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Everglades |
26 | University in 2005, and |
27 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams was a member of the Treasure Coast |
28 | Regional Planning Council and was appointed by the President of |
29 | the Senate to the Florida Commission on Local Government, and |
30 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams was a member of the City's Planning |
31 | and Zoning Board from 1987 to 1989 and served five terms as City |
32 | Council Member from 1989 to 1999, including three years as |
33 | Deputy Mayor, and |
34 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams is a past president and current board |
35 | member of the Palm Beach County League of Cities and serves on |
36 | several community advisory boards, and |
37 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams has been a member of many nonprofit |
38 | community advisory boards over the years, including the Boys and |
39 | Girls Club, and |
40 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams is a past president of the Boca Raton |
41 | Republican Club and served as the Palm Beach County chairman for |
42 | Congressman Clay Shaw's reelection campaigns, vice chairman for |
43 | the "Bush for Governor" campaign in 1998, and co-chairman for |
44 | the "Dole for President" campaign in 1996, and |
45 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams gained national recognition and the |
46 | respect of local voters during the first bioterrorist attack in |
47 | American history, the discovery of anthrax at the American |
48 | Media, Inc. building in October 2001, and |
49 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams received the Distinguished Service |
50 | Medal from the Israel National Police for his leadership during |
51 | the ordeal and was invited by a United States Senate |
52 | subcommittee to testify on national television regarding the |
53 | government's response, and |
54 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams was dubbed by the media as the "Rudy |
55 | Giuliani of the Tropics" for his handling of the incident, and |
56 | WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams has been voted "Best City Official" |
57 | each year since 2002 by the readers of the Boca Raton Times, |

63 | That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes the |
64 | exemplary personal and professional achievements of Mayor Steven |
65 | L. Abrams and offers its gratitude for his dedicated service to |
66 | the City of Boca Raton and Palm Beach County and his unwavering |
67 | commitment to the furtherance of good government at the state |
68 | and national levels. |
69 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
70 | presented to Mayor Steven L. Abrams as a tangible token of the |
71 | sentiments expressed herein. |
