House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing Mayor Steven L. Abrams for his
3exemplary personal and professional achievements.

5     WHEREAS, Steven L. Abrams assumed office as the 32nd Mayor
6of the City of Boca Raton, Florida, in March 2001 and was
7reelected in 2003 without opposition and in 2005 with the most
8votes cast in the history of the city, and
9     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams, a recipient of the Philo Sherman
10Bennett Prize for the best government senior thesis, graduated
11magna cum laude in 1980 from Harvard University and received his
12law degree from The George Washington University in 1985, and
13     WHEREAS, prior to moving to Florida, Mayor Abrams served in
14the White House as law clerk to the Counsel to President Reagan
15and is a member of the Florida and the District of Columbia
16Bars, and
17     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams is an attorney in the Boca Raton
18office of the national law firm of Blank Rome LLP, and
19     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams has lectured at the Florida Atlantic
20University College of Business and was inducted into the
21National Society of Collegiate Scholars as a distinguished
22member by the Florida Atlantic University chapter in 2001, and
23     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams received the President's Talon
24Leadership Award from Florida Atlantic University in 2003 and
25was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Everglades
26University in 2005, and
27     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams was a member of the Treasure Coast
28Regional Planning Council and was appointed by the President of
29the Senate to the Florida Commission on Local Government, and
30     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams was a member of the City's Planning
31and Zoning Board from 1987 to 1989 and served five terms as City
32Council Member from 1989 to 1999, including three years as
33Deputy Mayor, and
34     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams is a past president and current board
35member of the Palm Beach County League of Cities and serves on
36several community advisory boards, and
37     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams has been a member of many nonprofit
38community advisory boards over the years, including the Boys and
39Girls Club, and
40     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams is a past president of the Boca Raton
41Republican Club and served as the Palm Beach County chairman for
42Congressman Clay Shaw's reelection campaigns, vice chairman for
43the "Bush for Governor" campaign in 1998, and co-chairman for
44the "Dole for President" campaign in 1996, and
45     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams gained national recognition and the
46respect of local voters during the first bioterrorist attack in
47American history, the discovery of anthrax at the American
48Media, Inc. building in October 2001, and
49     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams received the Distinguished Service
50Medal from the Israel National Police for his leadership during
51the ordeal and was invited by a United States Senate
52subcommittee to testify on national television regarding the
53government's response, and
54     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams was dubbed by the media as the "Rudy
55Giuliani of the Tropics" for his handling of the incident, and
56     WHEREAS, Mayor Abrams has been voted "Best City Official"
57each year since 2002 by the readers of the Boca Raton Times,
58NOW, THEREFORE,

60Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
61Florida:

63     That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes the
64exemplary personal and professional achievements of Mayor Steven
65L. Abrams and offers its gratitude for his dedicated service to
66the City of Boca Raton and Palm Beach County and his unwavering
67commitment to the furtherance of good government at the state
68and national levels.
69     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
70presented to Mayor Steven L. Abrams as a tangible token of the
71sentiments expressed herein.
