5 | WHEREAS, Friday, March 12, 2008, marked the 96th |
6 | anniversary of the founding of the Girl Scouts of the United |
7 | States of America by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912, and |
8 | WHEREAS, on March 16, 1950, the Girl Scouts became the |
9 | first national organization for girls to be granted a federal |
10 | charter by Congress, and |
11 | WHEREAS, throughout its long and distinguished history, |
12 | Girl Scouts - the preeminent organization for girls - has |
13 | inspired millions of girls with the highest ideals of character, |
14 | conduct, patriotism, and service to others so that they may |
15 | become model citizens in their communities, and |
16 | WHEREAS, some 50 million women have enjoyed the benefits of |
17 | the Girl Scouts program, as an American tradition, for 96 years, |
18 | and |
19 | WHEREAS, the State of Florida is home to more than 104,000 |
20 | participants in the Girl Scouts program, and |
21 | WHEREAS, Girl Scouting offers leadership and guidance to |
22 | businesses and communities in teaching girls the skills needed |
23 | to take active roles in math, science, and technology careers |
24 | and to fulfill our country's economic needs, and |
25 | WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts offers girls age 5 through 17 a |
26 | variety of opportunities to develop strong values and life |
27 | skills and provides a wide range of activities to meet girls' |
28 | interests and needs, and |
29 | WHEREAS, through Girl Scouting, every girl everywhere can |
30 | grow strong, gain self-confidence and skills for success, and |
31 | learn her responsibilities to the world around her, and |
32 | WHEREAS, through participation in the legislative process, |
33 | Girl Scouts learn how to use their own voices to address issues |
34 | of concern to them and how to go about making changes for the |
35 | betterment of their community, NOW, THEREFORE, |
