House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the week of June 23-27, 2008, as
3"Humane Society Appreciation Week" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, there are currently 48 humane societies serving 40
6counties in this state in the struggle with domestic animal
7overpopulation, and
8     WHEREAS, humane societies work to promote domestic animal
9adoption and education, eliminate animal overpopulation, prevent
10animal cruelty, and relieve animal suffering, and
11     WHEREAS, humane societies have diligently served many
12communities in this state for as many as 48 years, and
13     WHEREAS, the estimated population of more than 800,000
14unwanted and stray animals euthanized in this state each year
15constitutes a potential health risk for rabies and other
16contagious diseases in this state, and
17     WHEREAS, each year humane societies work to locate
18permanent homes for many thousands of unwanted animals and to
19promote regional spay and neuter campaigns as a preventive and
20responsible measure for controlling the domestic animal
21overpopulation in this state, and
22     WHEREAS, humane societies are staffed by an estimated
2310,000 residents of this state who unselfishly volunteer their
24time, energy, and expertise, NOW, THEREFORE,

26Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
27Florida:

29     That the Florida House of Representatives recognizes the
30week of June 23-27, 2008, as "Humane Society Appreciation Week"
31in Florida.
