House Resolution
2A resolution honoring Norman Braman for his philanthropy
3on behalf of the people of the State of Florida.
4
5     WHEREAS, Norman Braman was born August 22, 1932, in West
6Chester, Pennsylvania, the son of immigrants from Romania and
7Eastern Poland, and
8     WHEREAS, Norman Braman attended the University of Virginia
9on a basketball scholarship, sustained a career-ending injury
10during his first year, and returned to Philadelphia, where he
11graduated from Temple University in 1955 with a bachelor's
12degree in marketing, and
13     WHEREAS, following graduation, Norman Braman entered into a
14small business with his father-in-law, working days and nights,
15until 1969 when, wanting to spend more time with his wife and
16two daughters, he sold his interest in the family business and
17moved his family to the Miami area, settling in a vibrant Jewish
18community, and
19     WHEREAS, by 1975 Norman Braman owned Cadillac dealerships
20in Tampa and Miami and continued to succeed with each new
21business enterprise, becoming owner of the Philadelphia Eagles
22professional football team from 1985-1994, and
23     WHEREAS, Norman Braman is currently the Chief Executive
24Officer of Braman Management Association, which operates
25numerous car dealerships in Florida and Colorado, and
26     WHEREAS, Norman Braman is one of the original founders, and
27for 20 years served as president of the Board of Trustees of,
28the Miami Beach Holocaust Memorial and was appointed by
29President Ronald Reagan in 1983 to serve on the United States
30Holocaust Memorial Council, and
31     WHEREAS, Norman Braman has served as President of the
32Greater Miami Jewish Federation, which funds a network of more
33than 35 local agencies and programs to help meet the needs of
34the local Jewish community, and
35     WHEREAS, Norman Braman is a member of the University of
36Miami Board of Trustees and also serves on its Executive
37Committee, and
38     WHEREAS, in 1995 Norman Braman and his family established
39the Braman Family Foundation and in 2002 made a substantial gift
40to the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami to
41establish the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute, which
42conducts innovative research into the causes and means of
43prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer, and
44     WHEREAS, Norman Braman was recently instrumental in
45securing an $80 million grant from the Office of Tourism, Trade,
46and Economic Development to the Miami Institute of Human
47Genomics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine,
48and
49     WHEREAS, the Miami Institute of Human Genomics, established
50in January 2007, is home to the world's top geneticists, who
51conduct leading-edge work in indentifying genetic variants that
52underlie common human diseases, and
53     WHEREAS, Norman Braman, over many years, has shown himself
54to be a committed philanthropist, donating to causes such as the
55I Have a Dream Foundation, the Israel Emergency Fund, the United
56Way of Miami-Dade, and the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, NOW,
57THEREFORE,

59Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
60Florida:

62     That the House of Representatives offers sincere thanks to
63Norman Braman for his dedicated, unwavering, and continuing
64philanthropic activities, which have made a real difference in
65the lives of countless Floridians.
66     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
67presented to Norman Braman as a tangible token of the sentiments
68expressed herein.
