5 | WHEREAS, Norman Braman was born August 22, 1932, in West |
6 | Chester, Pennsylvania, the son of immigrants from Romania and |
7 | Eastern Poland, and |
8 | WHEREAS, Norman Braman attended the University of Virginia |
9 | on a basketball scholarship, sustained a career-ending injury |
10 | during his first year, and returned to Philadelphia, where he |
11 | graduated from Temple University in 1955 with a bachelor's |
12 | degree in marketing, and |
13 | WHEREAS, by 1975 Norman Braman owned automobile dealerships |
14 | in Tampa and Miami and continued to succeed with each new |
15 | business enterprise, becoming owner of the Philadelphia Eagles |
16 | professional football team from 1985-1994, and |
17 | WHEREAS, Norman Braman is currently the Chief Executive |
18 | Officer of Braman Management Association, which operates |
19 | numerous car dealerships in Florida and Colorado, and |
20 | WHEREAS, Norman Braman is one of the original founders, and |
21 | for 20 years served as president of the Board of Trustees of, |
22 | the Miami Beach Holocaust Memorial and was appointed by |
23 | President Ronald Reagan in 1983 to serve on the United States |
24 | Holocaust Memorial Council, and |
25 | WHEREAS, Norman Braman has served as President of the |
26 | Greater Miami Jewish Federation, which funds a network of more |
27 | than 35 local agencies and programs to help meet the needs of |
28 | the local Jewish community, and |
29 | WHEREAS, Norman Braman is Vice Chair of the Board of |
30 | Trustees of the University of Miami, and |
31 | WHEREAS, in 1995 Norman Braman and his family established |
32 | the Braman Family Foundation and in 2002 made a substantial gift |
33 | to the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami to |
34 | establish the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute, which |
35 | conducts innovative research into the causes and means of |
36 | prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of breast cancer, and |
37 | WHEREAS, Norman Braman was recently instrumental in |
38 | securing a grant from the Office of Tourism, Trade, and Economic |
39 | Development to fund the Miami Institute of Human Genomics at the |
40 | University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and |
41 | WHEREAS, the Miami Institute of Human Genomics, established |
42 | in January 2007, is home to the world's top geneticists, who |
43 | conduct leading-edge work in indentifying genetic variants that |
44 | underlie common human diseases, and |
45 | WHEREAS, Norman Braman was also instrumental in bringing |
46 | Art Basel, the world's largest and most prestigious art fair, |
47 | from Basel, Switzerland, to South Florida, and |
48 | WHEREAS, Norman Braman and his wife, Irma, have served as |
49 | Co-Chairs of Art Basel Miami Beach, since its inception in 2002, |
50 | which has brought considerable economic and cultural benefits to |
51 | the State of Florida and is now recognized as the premier art |
52 | fair in the United States, and |
53 | WHEREAS, Norman Braman, over many years, has shown himself |
54 | to be a committed philanthropist, donating to causes such as the |
55 | I Have a Dream Foundation, the Israel Emergency Fund, the United |
56 | Way of Miami-Dade, and the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, NOW, |
57 | THEREFORE, |

62 | That the House of Representatives offers sincere thanks to |
63 | Norman Braman for his dedicated, unwavering, and continuing |
64 | philanthropic activities, which have made a real difference in |
65 | the lives of countless Floridians. |
66 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
67 | presented to Norman Braman as a tangible token of the sentiments |
68 | expressed herein. |
