House Resolution
2A resolution commending Senator Helen Gordon Davis for her
3distinguished service to Florida's displaced homemakers
4and designating April 10, 2008, as "Senator Helen Gordon
5Davis Appreciation Day" in Florida.

7     WHEREAS, Senator Helen Gordon Davis served the people of
8Florida as a State Representative from 1974 to 1988 and as a
9State Senator from 1988 to 1992, and
10     WHEREAS, Senator Davis worked tirelessly to promote the
11well-being of women and children and has been honored for her
12work by many groups, a few of which include the Florida Women's
13Consortium, American Business Women, the National Organization
14for Women, the Florida Network of Youth and Family Services, and
15the American Association of University Women, and
16     WHEREAS, Senator Davis recognized a need for widows and
17divorcees who had been homemakers during most of their adult
18lives to have peer counseling, job training, and support groups
19to help them enter the job market, so she established the first
20displaced homemaker program at the Centre for Women in Tampa,
21and
22     WHEREAS, following the success of the program in Tampa,
23Senator Davis sponsored legislation to provide displaced
24homemaker centers throughout the state, and
25     WHEREAS, in 1988, Senator Davis sponsored legislation to
26establish the Displaced Homemaker Trust Fund from marriage
27license fees and divorce filing fees, which trust fund continues
28in existence to this day, and
29     WHEREAS, the Florida House of Representatives would like to
30honor Senator Helen Gordon Davis for her vision and pioneering
31efforts on behalf of Florida's displaced homemakers, NOW,
32THEREFORE,

34Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
35Florida:

37     That the House of Representatives designates April 10,
382008, as "Senator Helen Gordon Davis Appreciation Day" in
39Florida and commends Senator Davis for her distinguished service
40to Florida's displaced homemakers.
41     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
42presented to Senator Helen Gordon Davis as a tangible token of
43the sentiments expressed herein.
