| 5 | WHEREAS, cancer will strike approximately one out of two |
| 6 | men and about one out of every three women in the course of |
| 7 | their lives, and |
| 8 | WHEREAS, cancer accounts for one out every four deaths and |
| 9 | is the second-leading cause of death in the United States, and |
| 10 | WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that more |
| 11 | than 101,920 new cases of cancer in Florida will be diagnosed |
| 12 | and more than 41,660 Floridians will die from cancer in 2008, |
| 13 | and |
| 14 | WHEREAS, many cancers can be prevented by lifestyle changes |
| 15 | or cured if detected early and treated promptly, and |
| 16 | WHEREAS, as many as one-third of the cancer deaths |
| 17 | occurring each year are related to nutrition, physical |
| 18 | inactivity, obesity, and other lifestyle factors, and thus might |
| 19 | have been prevented, and |
| 20 | WHEREAS, almost half of all individuals who continue to |
| 21 | smoke may expect to die prematurely from lung cancer or other |
| 22 | tobacco-related diseases, and |
| 23 | WHEREAS, 30 percent of all cancer deaths and 87 percent of |
| 24 | all lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking cigarettes or other |
| 25 | tobacco products, and |
| 26 | WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for all cancers combined |
| 27 | is 66 percent, but survival rates may increase even more for |
| 28 | certain cancers such as breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers |
| 29 | if they are detected and treated early, and |
| 30 | WHEREAS, rates of cancer incidence and cancer deaths in |
| 31 | Florida may be significantly reduced through increased awareness |
| 32 | of the American Cancer Society's cancer-screening guidelines and |
| 33 | compliance with those guidelines, and |
| 34 | WHEREAS, promotion of Cancer Control Awareness Month and |
| 35 | statewide cancer-control initiatives, such as the Florida |
| 36 | Dialogue on Cancer sponsored by the American Cancer Society, may |
| 37 | assist Florida in significantly reducing the burden of cancer |
| 38 | that Floridians and the state currently confront, NOW, |
| 39 | THEREFORE, |

| 41 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 42 | Florida: |
| 43 |
|
| 44 | That the House of Representatives recognizes the month of |
| 45 | April 2008 as "Cancer Control Awareness Month" in Florida and |
| 46 | urges all Floridians to understand the risks associated with |
| 47 | cancer, to change behaviors that increase their cancer risks, |
| 48 | and to follow the American Cancer Society cancer-screening |
| 49 | guidelines. |
