House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing April 2008 as "Cancer Control
3Awareness Month" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, cancer will strike approximately one out of two
6men and about one out of every three women in the course of
7their lives, and
8     WHEREAS, cancer accounts for one out every four deaths and
9is the second-leading cause of death in the United States, and
10     WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that more
11than 101,920 new cases of cancer in Florida will be diagnosed
12and more than 41,660 Floridians will die from cancer in 2008,
13and
14     WHEREAS, many cancers can be prevented by lifestyle changes
15or cured if detected early and treated promptly, and
16     WHEREAS, as many as one-third of the cancer deaths
17occurring each year are related to nutrition, physical
18inactivity, obesity, and other lifestyle factors, and thus might
19have been prevented, and
20     WHEREAS, almost half of all individuals who continue to
21smoke may expect to die prematurely from lung cancer or other
22tobacco-related diseases, and
23     WHEREAS, 30 percent of all cancer deaths and 87 percent of
24all lung cancer deaths are caused by smoking cigarettes or other
25tobacco products, and
26     WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for all cancers combined
27is 66 percent, but survival rates may increase even more for
28certain cancers such as breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers
29if they are detected and treated early, and
30     WHEREAS, rates of cancer incidence and cancer deaths in
31Florida may be significantly reduced through increased awareness
32of the American Cancer Society's cancer-screening guidelines and
33compliance with those guidelines, and
34     WHEREAS, promotion of Cancer Control Awareness Month and
35statewide cancer-control initiatives, such as the Florida
36Dialogue on Cancer sponsored by the American Cancer Society, may
37assist Florida in significantly reducing the burden of cancer
38that Floridians and the state currently confront, NOW,
39THEREFORE,

41Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
42Florida:

44     That the House of Representatives recognizes the month of
45April 2008 as "Cancer Control Awareness Month" in Florida and
46urges all Floridians to understand the risks associated with
47cancer, to change behaviors that increase their cancer risks,
48and to follow the American Cancer Society cancer-screening
49guidelines.
