| 5 | WHEREAS, breast cancer is the third most frequently |
| 6 | diagnosed cancer and is ranked third among cancer deaths in |
| 7 | women in the United States, and |
| 8 | WHEREAS, Florida ranks second in the nation for the total |
| 9 | number of breast cancer deaths and fourth in the nation for the |
| 10 | total number of new breast cancer cases, and |
| 11 | WHEREAS, all women are at risk for breast cancer, the |
| 12 | single most important factor of which is age since breast |
| 13 | cancers predominantly occur in women age 50 and older, and the |
| 14 | risk increases with age until age 80, and |
| 15 | WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society estimates that more |
| 16 | than 11,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be |
| 17 | diagnosed in Florida and approximately 2,760 women will die of |
| 18 | the disease during the year 2008, and |
| 19 | WHEREAS, a woman living in Florida has a one-in-eight |
| 20 | chance of developing breast cancer, and |
| 21 | WHEREAS, for women living in the United States, breast |
| 22 | cancer is the first most common cause of cancer death in |
| 23 | Hispanic women and the second most common cause of cancer death |
| 24 | in white, African-American, Asian-American, and American Indian |
| 25 | women, and |
| 26 | WHEREAS, early detection, through routine clinical |
| 27 | examinations and mammography screening beginning at age 40 in |
| 28 | compliance with the American Cancer Society recommended |
| 29 | guidelines, is the key to detecting breast cancer at the |
| 30 | earliest stages, and |
| 31 | WHEREAS, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer is 98 |
| 32 | percent if the disease is found in its earliest stages but drops |
| 33 | to 26.7 percent if the cancer is detected late in a stage of |
| 34 | metastasis, and |
| 35 | WHEREAS, in conjunction with the promotion of October as |
| 36 | "Breast Cancer Awareness Month," breast cancer awareness |
| 37 | programs, such as the American Cancer Society's "Reach to |
| 38 | Recovery" program, will promote early breast cancer detection |
| 39 | through regular screening, NOW, THEREFORE, |

| 41 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
| 42 | Florida: |

| 44 | That the House of Representatives designates October 2008 |
| 45 | as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Florida and urges all |
| 46 | women to understand the risks associated with breast cancer, to |
| 47 | take preventive steps to minimize those risks, and to undergo |
| 48 | early detection procedures such as mammography and compliance |
| 49 | with the American Cancer Society recommended breast cancer |
| 50 | screening guidelines. |
