A bill to be entitled
2An act relating to the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship
3Program; amending s. 1009.535, F.S.; revising the academic
4requirements for eligibility for a Florida Medallion
5Scholars award for a student who has attended a home
6education program; providing an effective date.

8Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

10     Section 1.  Subsection (1) of section 1009.535, Florida
11Statutes, is amended to read:
12     1009.535  Florida Medallion Scholars award.--
13     (1)  A student is eligible for a Florida Medallion Scholars
14award if the student meets the general eligibility requirements
15for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program and the
16student:
17     (a)  Has achieved a weighted grade point average of 3.0 as
18calculated pursuant to s. 1009.531, or the equivalent, in high
19school courses that are designated by the State Board of
20Education as college-preparatory academic courses; and has
21attained at least the score identified by rules of the State
22Board of Education on the combined verbal and quantitative parts
23of the Scholastic Aptitude Test, the Scholastic Assessment Test,
24or the recentered Scholastic Assessment Test of the College
25Entrance Examination, or an equivalent score on the ACT
26Assessment Program; or
27     (b)  Has attended a home education program according to s.
281002.41 at least during grades 11 and 12 and has attained a
29score of at least 100 points higher than the score identified by
30rules of the State Board of Education under paragraph (a) on the
31combined verbal and quantitative parts of the Scholastic
32Aptitude Test, the Scholastic Assessment Test, or the recentered
33Scholastic Assessment Test of the College Entrance Examination,
34or an equivalent score on the ACT Assessment Program; or has
35attended a home education program according to s. 1002.41 at
36least during grades 11 and 12, has documented successful
37completion of a college-preparatory curriculum as outlined in
38paragraph (a) through a Florida public school, a private school
39registered with the Department of Education, or dual enrollment
40pursuant to s. 1007.271, and has attained at least the score
41identified by rules of the State Board of Education under
42paragraph (a) on the combined verbal and quantitative parts of
43the Scholastic Aptitude Test, the Scholastic Assessment Test, or
44the recentered Scholastic Assessment Test of the College
45Entrance Examination, or an equivalent score on the ACT
46Assessment Program; or
47     (c)  Has completed the International Baccalaureate
48curriculum but failed to earn the International Baccalaureate
49Diploma or has completed the Advanced International Certificate
50of Education curriculum but failed to earn the Advanced
51International Certificate of Education Diploma, and has attained
52at least the score identified by rules of the State Board of
53Education on the combined verbal and quantitative parts of the
54Scholastic Aptitude Test, the Scholastic Assessment Test, or the
55recentered Scholastic Assessment Test of the College Entrance
56Examination, or an equivalent score on the ACT Assessment
57Program; or
58     (d)(c)  Has been recognized by the merit or achievement
59program of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as a
60scholar or finalist but has not completed a program of community
61service as provided in s. 1009.534; or
62     (e)(d)  Has been recognized by the National Hispanic
63Recognition Program as a scholar, but has not completed a
64program of community service as provided in s. 1009.534.
65     Section 2.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2008.
