House Memorial
2A memorial to the Congress of the United States, urging
3Congress to extend the freeze on increases in the size or
4weight of commercial motor vehicles.
5
6     WHEREAS, the State of Florida is committed to protecting
7the safety of motorists on its highways and to protecting
8taxpayers' investment in our highway infrastructure, and
9     WHEREAS, there are proposals to remove the federal freeze
10on the size or weight of commercial motor vehicles, including
11triple-trailer trucks, in legislation reauthorizing funding for
12federal transportation, which will be considered in the United
13States Congress in 2009, and
14     WHEREAS, federal and state studies have found that
15increasing the size and weight of commercial motor vehicles may
16accelerate the deterioration of bridges, and
17     WHEREAS, the Federal Highway Administration has classified
181,994 bridges in Florida as structurally deficient or
19functionally obsolete, NOW, THEREFORE,
20
21Be It Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
22
23     That the Congress of the United States is requested to
24extend the freeze on increases in the size and weight of
25commercial motor vehicles on the roads and highways of this
26country.
27     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
28dispatched to the President of the United States, to the
29President of the United States Senate, to the Speaker of the
30United States House of Representatives, and to each member of
