Florida Senate - 2009 (Corrected Copy)(NP) SR 2114 By Senator Bullard 39-02189A-09 20092114__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the first Tuesday in December 3 as “Florida Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day.” 4 5 WHEREAS, a cancer survivor is anyone who has a history of 6 cancer from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of 7 life, and 8 WHEREAS, there are more than 9.8 million cancer survivors 9 in the United States, and more than 25,000 1-year to 5-year 10 cancer survivors in the State of Florida, and 11 WHEREAS, more than 1.4 million new cancer cases will be 12 diagnosed in the United States this year, and 13 WHEREAS, while many public health initiatives address early 14 detection, prevention, and control of cancer, public health 15 efforts to address cancer survivorship are relatively new, and 16 WHEREAS, cancer survivors face numerous physical, 17 psychological, social, spiritual, and financial issues at 18 diagnosis, during treatment, and for the remaining years of 19 their lives, and 20 WHEREAS, it is desirable that pain, disability, and 21 psychosocial distress be minimized for those living with, 22 through, and beyond cancer, and 23 WHEREAS, this state has an active and productive cancer 24 survivor population whose members demonstrate that a cancer 25 diagnosis is no longer an automatic death sentence, and 26 WHEREAS, spas and salons can provide survivors a wonderful 27 gift of support by offering free services to cancer survivors on 28 the first Tuesday in December as part of a coordinated cancer 29 survivor event originated by Barbara Paget of Highland Park, 30 Illinois, and supported by Gilda’s Club and the Conference of 31 Women Legislators who believe that the real beauty of the day is 32 the support that it gives, NOW, THEREFORE, 33 34 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 35 36 That the Senate recognizes the first Tuesday in December as 37 “Florida Cancer Survivor Beauty and Support Day” and urges all 38 spas and salons to honor cancer survivors by offering free 39 services on this day to women, men, and children who have 40 courageously fought their battle with cancer. 41 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be 42 spread upon the Journal of the Senate as a tangible token of 43 recognition of all cancer survivors and appreciation for salons 44 and spas that participate in this day by offering free services 45 to those survivors.
