House Comm: RCS . 04/07/2009 . . . . ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— ————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— The Committee on Education Pre-K - 12 (Constantine) recommended the following: 1 Senate Amendment to Amendment (575226) (with title 2 amendment) 3 4 Delete lines 185 - 202 5 and insert: 6 (1) This section may be cited as the “Corporal Larry E. 7 Smedley Vietnam Veterans High School Diploma Act.” 8 (2) The Commissioner of Education may award a standard high 9 school diploma to honorably discharged veterans who started high 10 school between 1937 and 1946 and were scheduled to graduate 11 between 1941 and 1950 but were inducted into the United States 12 Armed Forces between September 16, 1940, and December 31, 1946, 13 prior to completing the necessary high school graduation 14 requirements. Upon the recommendation of the commissioner, the 15 State Board of Education may develop criteria and guidelines for 16 awarding such diplomas. 17 (3) The Commissioner of Education may award a standard high 18 school diploma to honorably discharged veterans who started high 19 school between 1946 and 1950 and were scheduled to graduate 20 between 1949 and 1955 but were inducted into the United States 21 Armed Forces between June 1949 and January 1955 and served 22 during the Korean War prior to completing the necessary high 23 school graduation requirements. Upon the recommendation of the 24 commissioner, the State Board of Education may develop criteria 25 and guidelines for awarding such diplomas. 26 (4) The Commissioner of Education may award a standard high 27 school diploma to honorably discharged veterans who were 28 inducted into the United States Armed Forces during the Vietnam 29 Era, as defined in s. 1.01(14), before completing the necessary 30 high school graduation requirements.
