Florida Senate - 2009 (NP) SR 2776 By Senator Lawson 6-04176A-09 20092776__ 1 Senate Resolution 2 A resolution recognizing the week of September 1-7, 3 2009, as “Drowsy Driver Prevention Week” in Florida. 4 5 WHEREAS, a 2008 Sleep in America Poll reported that 32 6 percent of Americans reported driving while drowsy at least once 7 per month in the previous year, and 8 WHEREAS, among Americans who drive, 36 percent have 9 reported nodding off or falling asleep while driving, and 10 WHEREAS, drowsy driving is a silent killer that has 11 resulted in thousands of injuries and deaths that were otherwise 12 preventable, and 13 WHEREAS, the incidence of drowsy driving can be reduced by 14 educating drivers of the risks of driving without adequate 15 amounts of rest, and 16 WHEREAS, many Florida residents die each year from crashes 17 that are related to drowsy, fatigued driving, including 8-year 18 old Ronshay Dugans, who died when a cement truck driven by a 19 drowsy driver overturned on the bus she was riding in 20 Tallahassee on September 5, 2008, NOW, THEREFORE, 21 22 Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida: 23 24 That the week of September 1-7, 2009, is recognized as 25 “Drowsy Driver Prevention Week” in Florida and all residents are 26 encouraged to remember those Floridians who have died in 27 collisions related to drowsy driving.
