    1                        A bill to be entitled                      
    2         An act relating to high school diplomas; amending s.
    3         1003.43, F.S.; authorizing the Commissioner of
    4         Education to award a high school diploma to honorably
    5         discharged Vietnam War veterans; providing an
    6         effective date.

    8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:
    9         
   10         Section 1. Subsection (14) is added to section 1003.43,
   11  Florida Statutes, to read:
   12         1003.43 General requirements for high school graduation.—
   13         (14) The Commissioner of Education may award a standard
   14  high school diploma to honorably discharged veterans who were
   15  inducted into the United States Armed Forces during the Vietnam
   16  Era, as defined in s. 1.01(14), before completing the necessary
   17  high school graduation requirements. Upon the recommendation of
   18  the commissioner, the State Board of Education may develop
   19  criteria and guidelines for awarding such diplomas.
   20         Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2009.
