    2         An act relating to high school diplomas; providing a
    3         short title; amending s. 1003.43, F.S.; authorizing
    4         the Commissioner of Education to award a high school
    5         diploma to honorably discharged Vietnam War veterans;
    6         providing an effective date.

    8  Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

   10         Section 1. This act may be cited as the “Corporal Larry E.
   11  Smedley Vietnam Veterans High School Diploma Act.”
   12         Section 2. Subsection (14) is added to section 1003.43,
   13  Florida Statutes, to read:
   14         1003.43 General requirements for high school graduation.—
   15         (14) The Commissioner of Education may award a standard
   16  high school diploma to honorably discharged veterans who were
   17  inducted into the United States Armed Forces during the Vietnam
   18  Era, as defined in s. 1.01(14), before completing the necessary
   19  high school graduation requirements. Upon the recommendation of
   20  the commissioner, the State Board of Education may develop
   21  criteria and guidelines for awarding such diplomas.
   22         Section 3. This act shall take effect July 1, 2009.
