A bill to be entitled
2An act relating to medical research; amending ss. 215.5602
3and 381.922, F.S.; revising amounts of annual
4appropriations from the General Revenue Fund to the
5Biomedical Research Trust Fund within the Department of
6Health for specified purposes; providing an effective
7date.

9Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida:

11     Section 1.  Subsection (12) of section 215.5602, Florida
12Statutes, as amended by chapter 2009-5, Laws of Florida, is
13amended to read:
14     215.5602  James and Esther King Biomedical Research
15Program.--
16     (12)  For the 2009-2010 2008-2009 fiscal year and each
17fiscal year thereafter, the sum of $2 4.5 million is
18appropriated annually from recurring funds in the General
19Revenue Fund to the Biomedical Research Trust Fund within the
20Department of Health for purposes of the James and Esther King
21Biomedical Research Program pursuant to this section. From these
22funds up to $250,000 shall be available for the operating costs
23of the Florida Center for Universal Research to Eradicate
24Disease.
25     Section 2.  Subsection (5) of section 381.922, Florida
26Statutes, as amended by chapter 2009-5, Laws of Florida, is
27amended to read:
28     381.922  William G. "Bill" Bankhead, Jr., and David Coley
29Cancer Research Program.--
30     (5)  For the 2009-2010 2008-2009 fiscal year and each
31fiscal year thereafter, the sum of $3 6.75 million is
32appropriated annually from recurring funds in the General
33Revenue Fund to the Biomedical Research Trust Fund within the
34Department of Health for purposes of the William G. "Bill"
35Bankhead, Jr., and David Coley Cancer Research Program and shall
36be distributed pursuant to this section to provide grants to
37researchers seeking cures for cancer, with emphasis given to the
38goals enumerated in s. 381.921. From the total funds
39appropriated, an amount of up to 10 percent may be used for
40administrative expenses.
41     Section 3.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2009.
