House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the 30th Anniversary of the
3Taiwan Relations Act.

5     WHEREAS, April 10, 2009, will mark the 30th anniversary of
6the enactment of the Taiwan Relations Act, codifying in law the
7basis for continued commercial and cultural relations between
8the United States and the Republic of China, Taiwan, and
9     WHEREAS, the Taiwan Relations Act continues to be
10instrumental in maintaining peace, security, and stability in
11the Taiwan Strait since enactment in 1979, and
12     WHEREAS, Taiwan's democracy has deepened with the second
13peaceful transfer of power from one political party to another
14after the presidential election in March 2008, and
15     WHEREAS, Florida maintains a vested interest in relations
16between United States and Taiwan as a sister state of the
17Province of Taiwan, and currently embraces six sister city
18relationships: Kaohsiung County and Fort Lauderdale; Kaohsiung
19County and Miami; Kaohsiung County and Pensacola; Miao-Li County
20and Kissimmee; Tainan City and Orlando; and Taipei County and
21Miami-Dade County, and
22     WHEREAS, a Taipei Economic and Cultural Office is located
23in Miami, promoting progress in our longstanding friendly and
24mutually beneficial interests of political relations, security,
25trade, investment, culture and education, NOW, THEREFORE,

27Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
28Florida:

30     That House of Representatives recognizes the unwavering
31commitment of Congress to the Taiwan Relations Act as the
32cornerstone of the strong and deepening relations between the
33United States and Taiwan and remains committed to upholding and
34strengthening the sister state relationship between Florida and
35Taiwan.
36     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
37presented to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Miami as
38a tangible token of the sentiments expressed herein.
