8 | WHEREAS, on January 1, 1959, a Communist dictator seized |
9 | the government of the Republic of Cuba, occasioning a massive |
10 | exodus of Cuban nationals, most of whom immigrated to the United |
11 | States, and |
12 | WHEREAS, men and women of both American and Cuban origin |
13 | determined that only an armed invasion could overthrow the |
14 | Communist dictatorship subjugating the people of Cuba, and, on |
15 | April 17, 1961, almost 1,500 men, trained, directed, armed, and |
16 | equipped by the United States, landed on the southern coast of |
17 | Cuba in an area known as "Bahia de Chochinos" or "Bay of Pigs," |
18 | and |
19 | WHEREAS, during the next few days, in the course of a |
20 | battle against an army immensely superior in manpower, |
21 | firepower, and supplies, nearly 100 men lost their lives, |
22 | including several who were captured and immediately |
23 | assassinated, and |
24 | WHEREAS, the greater part of the remaining forces was |
25 | captured, and, after being imprisoned for close to 20 months, |
26 | these men were ransomed by President John F. Kennedy and |
27 | returned to the United States, where they became productive |
28 | members of this nation's society, never, however, forgetting |
29 | their beloved native land, and |
30 | WHEREAS, April 17, 2009, marks the 48th anniversary of the |
31 | Bay of Pigs Invasion, an event held in the hearts of all who |
32 | long for the liberation of the Republic of Cuba, NOW, THEREFORE, |

34 | Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of |
35 | Florida: |

37 | That the Florida House of Representatives: |
38 | (1) Designates April 17, 2009, as "Bay of Pigs Memorial |
39 | Day" in Florida; |
40 | (2) Expresses its great respect for and admiration of all |
41 | members of Brigada de Asalto 2506 (Assault Brigade 2506), both |
42 | living and deceased, and joins them in their fervent desire for |
43 | the liberation from Communist dictatorship of the Republic of |
44 | Cuba and its oppressed people; and |
45 | (3) Commends the Bay of Pigs Museum and Library for its |
46 | excellent work in preserving photos and memorabilia of the |
47 | history of the Bay of Pigs Invasion. |
48 | BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be |
49 | presented to Brigada de Asalto 2506 as a tangible token of the |
50 | sentiments expressed herein. |
