House Resolution
2A resolution designating April 17, 2009, as "Bay of Pigs
3Memorial Day" in Florida and commending the Bay of Pigs
4Museum and Library of the 2506 Assault Brigade for its
5excellent work in preserving photos and memorabilia of the
6history of the Bay of Pigs Invasion.

8     WHEREAS, on January 1, 1959, a Communist dictator seized
9the government of the Republic of Cuba, occasioning a massive
10exodus of Cuban nationals, most of whom immigrated to the United
11States, and
12     WHEREAS, men and women of both American and Cuban origin
13determined that only an armed invasion could overthrow the
14Communist dictatorship subjugating the people of Cuba, and, on
15April 17, 1961, almost 1,500 men, trained, directed, armed, and
16equipped by the United States, landed on the southern coast of
17Cuba in an area known as "Bahia de Chochinos" or "Bay of Pigs,"
18and
19     WHEREAS, during the next few days, in the course of a
20battle against an army immensely superior in manpower,
21firepower, and supplies, nearly 100 men lost their lives,
22including several who were captured and immediately
23assassinated, and
24     WHEREAS, the greater part of the remaining forces was
25captured, and, after being imprisoned for close to 20 months,
26these men were ransomed by President John F. Kennedy and
27returned to the United States, where they became productive
28members of this nation's society, never, however, forgetting
29their beloved native land, and
30     WHEREAS, April 17, 2009, marks the 48th anniversary of the
31Bay of Pigs Invasion, an event held in the hearts of all who
32long for the liberation of the Republic of Cuba, NOW, THEREFORE,

34Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
35Florida:

37     That the Florida House of Representatives:
38     (1)  Designates April 17, 2009, as "Bay of Pigs Memorial
39Day" in Florida;
40     (2)  Expresses its great respect for and admiration of all
41members of Brigada de Asalto 2506 (Assault Brigade 2506), both
42living and deceased, and joins them in their fervent desire for
43the liberation from Communist dictatorship of the Republic of
44Cuba and its oppressed people; and
45     (3)  Commends the Bay of Pigs Museum and Library for its
46excellent work in preserving photos and memorabilia of the
47history of the Bay of Pigs Invasion.
48     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be
49presented to Brigada de Asalto 2506 as a tangible token of the
50sentiments expressed herein.
