2A resolution recognizing April 16, 2009, as "Alpha Kappa
3Alpha Sorority Day" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority was founded in 1908 at
6Howard University in Washington, D.C., and is the oldest Greek
7organization established by African American college women, and
8     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority has grown from 16
9members in one chapter to over 200,000 women in more than 950
10chapters extending across the United States, the Caribbean,
11Germany, Japan, and Korea, and
12     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha has successfully balanced two
13themes throughout its history: the importance of the individual
14and the strength of an organization of women who possess ability
15and courage, and
16     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters, through their
17international network, have successfully implemented service
18programs that are committed to improving the living standards
19within the Black community through economic education, provided
20exposure and created opportunities for women entrepreneurs,
21adopted and assisted Black families, emphasized the importance
22of the Black male, and improved the mental and physical health
23of local communities, and
24     WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha is well represented in the
25Florida Legislature by Representatives Jennifer Carroll, Mia
26Jones, and Geraldine Thompson and Senator Frederica Wilson, NOW,
27THEREFORE,

29Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
30Florida:

32     That April 16, 2009, is recognized as "Alpha Kappa Alpha
33Sorority Day" in Florida in recognition of the many civic
34contributions that its members have made to this state.
