2 | A resolution recognizing the City of Lake City on the |
3 | occasion of its 2009 Sesquicentennial Anniversary |

6 | WHEREAS, 2009 marks the 150th anniversary of Lake City, |
7 | Florida, and |
8 | WHEREAS, historians have surmised that an Indian town, |
9 | named Alligator by the Seminole Chief Halpatter Tustennuggee, |
10 | existed at the present site of Lake City as early as 1817, and |
11 | WHEREAS, at the suggestion of Mrs. Alex Young and Columbia |
12 | County Representative Colonel Robert Brown, a legislative bill |
13 | was introduced on December 14, 1858, to change the name of the |
14 | town from Alligator to Lake City and on January 15, 1859, the |
15 | city was incorporated, and |
16 | WHEREAS, with its beautiful freshwater lakes, great |
17 | forests, fertile lands, exotic plants, and green pastures, the |
18 | City of Lake City is a wonderful place to live, work, play, and |
19 | raise a family, and |
20 | WHEREAS, Lake City's 150th Anniversary celebration will |
21 | feature entertainment for children and adults and will |
22 | incorporate many annual events, such as the Quilt Walk, the |
23 | Fourth of July, the Christmas Festival, the Olustee Festival, |
24 | and the Alligator Festival, as well as new events, such as the |
25 | Sesquicentennial Founders Day event honoring the community |
26 | founders and celebrating those who make the Lake City community |
27 | what it is today, and |
28 | WHEREAS, the City of Lake City looks forward to an even |
29 | brighter future as it celebrates its history with the 2009 |
30 | Sesquicentennial Celebration, NOW, THEREFORE, |

35 | That that the Florida House of Representatives hereby |
36 | recognizes the City of Lake City on the occasion of its 2009 |
37 | Sesquicentennial Anniversary Celebration and honors the |
38 | residents, community leaders, and elected officials of Lake City |
39 | for its 150 years of distinctive history. |
