House Resolution
2A resolution recognizing the week of June 21-27, 2009, as
3"Humane Society Appreciation Week" in Florida.

5     WHEREAS, as of 2006 there were 48 humane societies in this
6state serving 43 counties in the struggle with domestic animal
7overpopulation, and
8     WHEREAS, humane societies work to promote animal adoption
9and education, eliminate animal overpopulation, prevent animal
10cruelty, and relieve animal suffering, and
11     WHEREAS, humane societies have diligently served many
12communities in this state for as long as 45 years, and
13     WHEREAS, in 2007 approximately 590,000 dogs and cats were
14received into municipal and privately funded shelters, and
15approximately 108,000 of those animals were euthanized, and
16     WHEREAS, in 2008 humane societies served to locate
17permanent homes for many thousands of otherwise unwanted animals
18and promoted regional spay/neuter campaigns as a preventive and
19responsible measure for controlling the animal overpopulation in
20this state, and
21     WHEREAS, humane societies are staffed by residents of this
22state who unselfishly volunteer their time, energy, and
23expertise, NOW, THEREFORE,

25Be It Resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of
26Florida:
27
28     That the humane societies across this state are commended
29for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the people and
30animals of Florida and that the week of June 21-27, 2009, is
31recognized as "Humane Society Appreciation Week" in Florida.
